Page 5 t Judges base this highest accolade of the HSPA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest on an overall evaluation of the editorial quality of the newspaper. Judges look for the newspaper best serving its readers with all variables considered. They examine breadth and depth of coverage, quality of reporting and copy editing, news judgment and content balance, general appearance, imaginative approach to problem news areas, originality, reader interest and overall professionalism. The Blue Ribbon Award honors one daily and one nondaily newspaper, regardless of circulation size. Daily First place The Herald-Times (Bloomington) Comments: Layouts well-done. Overall well-designed. Cov- erage of "Wedding Day" on same sex marriage was strong. Excellent job explaining complicated issue in "Following this money" article. Nice to see sports trying different layout options. Local articles cover a wide range of topics. Second place The Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne) Comments: The paper benefits from a breadth and depth of local coverage – and an obvious commitment to tell the stories, big and small, from throughout its northeast Indiana territory. An outstanding sports section is a real strong point. Third place The Times (Munster) Comments: Strong local news report; impressive progress edition; well-edited; consistent quality in writing, reporting.
