JACK WELLER Immediate Past President Board of Directors The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County (BGCCC) takes pride in following tra- ditions that started when the Club house was built in 1971. This year will be the 55th year of the Benefi t Reverse Drawing and Auction to be held Friday, June 16, at the LeGrand Cen- ter, with a meal at 5:30 p.m., and the reverse drawing start- ing at 6:30 p.m. The Grand Prize will be $15,000 in cash, less applicable taxes. Mid-way through the event, there will be a live auction. Prizes will be giv- en to the holder of every 50th number drawn throughout the night and the last fi ve numbers drawn before the fi nal prize will win a prize. You do not have to be present to win the prize. Phillip Philbeck, a nationally recognized artist, and Tracy Stilwell, Victorian Rose Pho- tography Studio, will continue a tradition started by Tracy's dad, Elwin Stilwell, and Phillip in 2008. They donated a framed print of Philbeck's artwork to be sold during the live auction por- tion of the event. It was Elwin's hope that the picture would raise about $600, which was the cost of a child to attend the After School Program at that time. Elwin died in 2009 and his daughter, Tracy and Phillip continued to donate a framed print each year. This will be their 15th year to donate the print. It is estimated that over $9,000 has been raised to help Club kids from this tradition. Dr. Faye Burton, Mable Froneberger, and Dr. Kim Greene, Board members, have coordinated the Car Raffl e and Silent and Live Auctions. "One of the things that we do that is unique to the BGCCC is that most of the people who buy a ticket have been with us almost all of those 55 years. They want the same number every year, making it a little more complicated," explained Dr. Burton. "We are fortunate to have businesses that work with us to offer prizes and pro- vide Silent and Live Auction items each year." Additionally, a featured item in the live auction this year is a pass to the Whitewater Center. The event is held the Friday before Father's Day. Cakes were offered which were baked by Board members and auc- tioned off that night. There are many fond memories of the competition between three of four bidders wanting to buy the cake to offer for dessert on Fa- ther's Day. Josh Propst, executive direc- tor, BGCCC, said, "We will sell 500 tickets at $100 each." A donor's contribution will provide needed funds to staff the after-school sites at all eight locations in Fallston, Spring- more, and Elizabeth elementa- ry schools, and the Caser and Kings Mountain elementaries. Children continue to attend the Main Club and the Teen Center on W. Sumter Street. With this expansion, the Club is serving over 500 children every day in the After School Program. The challenge it faces is raising the increased revenue to cover the expenses for the eight sites. wSince 1959, when the Boys Club was fi rst formed, children have learned life skills as well as sportsmanship at the Club. In 1966, the BGCCC was chartered by the Boys & Girls Club of America and is one of the longest operating Clubs in North Carolina. There are a few tickets left for the event. You may contact a Board member or stop in at the Club to purchase a ticket. Go to bgccleveco.org and look for the Purchase Raffl e Ticket box at the bottom of the web page. You will be able to pay for your ticket online, and the Club will have a record of your pur- chase at the LeGrand Center the night of the event.
