A staple publication in In- diana agriculture, the Tri- State Fertil- izer Recom- mendations, has been up- dated and re- leased. The states of In- diana, Mich- igan, and Ohio have similar meth- ods of grow- ing corn, soy- bean, wheat, and alfalfa, so the Extension specialists in those states have worked together to analyze field research. These recommendations were last updated in 1995, and the ram- ifications of updated recommendations will ripple across these states. Fertilizer recom- mendations may seem like a rather trivial concern, but Indiana code con- tains mention of this document. In partic- ular, confined feed- ing operations are restricted on their use of ma- nure due to phosphorus off- site movement concerns. The soil test levels that dictate the amount of additional phospho- rus through manure that can be applied are tied to the Tri- State Fertilizer Recommen- dations. Likewise, the state chemist requires every farm to have a nutrient manage- ment plan. Those plans re- quire agronomic rationale for rates of fertilizer materials used. Some plans may tie back into University recommenda- tions, of which these are the standard. What has changed? The new fertilizer recommenda- tions specifically call for use of the maximum return to ni- trogen economic model with web site based out of Iowa State. The old recommenda- tions were less specific and based on yield potentials that we have since eclipsed. A ma- jor change has been to get away from the build-up, main- tain, and drawdown nutrient application ranges. These ranges tended to recommend still applying some nutrients when soil tests showed high levels already existing, an ob- vious philosophical flaw. The new soil test levels include de- ficient, optimal, and sufficient ranges. The sufficient range recommends no further nu- The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, Januar y 20, 2021 A-5 READER GUIDE Subscriptions: Change of address: subscribers changing addresses will please give old address as well as new one along with phone number.
