(Especially farm toy collectors) I, like many, have a love-hate relationship with New Year's resolutions. Near- ly every year, I de- clare with haugh- ty elitism that I'm above such non- sense. And nearly every year, in the back corners of my mind, I think, "Hmm, this year, I will take up fenc- ing and commit to practicing no less than six hours a day." This year, I'm going for sim- ple; I'm going on a New Year's resolution diet. I know, I know. Fencing would be so much cooler. I wish my resolution were something adventurous — perhaps manually carry- ing the snows of the Arctic to the tip of Kilimanjaro without a single flake melting or some- thing Zen, such as listening to the ocean until she spells out my purpose, or something punny, such as listening to the ocean until she spells out my porpoise, or something controversial, such as arrest- ing Santa for breaking and en- tering and animal cruelty (be- cause reindeer hate heights). But 2020 took a lot out of all of us, so for 2021, a diet will have to do. It began when the general state of the country led me to not so much inhale sweets as be on an ice cream IV. Then the pandemic hit, and we were home all day. We could nev- er keep enough chips in the house for the all-day snack- ing. The RV trip was the final double blow. 1) I could walk back and forth from the front end to the back end 800 times in a day and only clock about 16 steps. 2) Our small fridge and small amount of cabinet space meant we had room for only one week's worth of meals for the family. No more cook- ing up to each person's speci- fications. No chicken for this one, no broccoli for that one, no meat at all for me, no spicy version and mild version. No, we all had to eat from the same pot. And with young picky children, that pot quick- ly began to hold only macaroni and cheese, frozen pizza, and tacos. 2020 isn't going down as the healthiest year ever for many reasons. Having my butt turn into a couch is just one of them. My friends all said that I should just cook what I want and the kids would have to deal. How I laughed in their faces. No, no, my kids will choose starvation before they eat what I want to make for my- self. But since I began this di- et, things have become inter- esting. On Jan. 1, I had McDonald's for breakfast, a milkshake for lunch and ramen noodles for dinner. I'm nothing if not dis- ciplined when it comes to a reso- lution. "No mat- ter," I told my- self. "Tomorrow will be better." On Jan. 2, I had a doughnut for breakfast and na- chos for lunch. A marked improve- ment! On Jan. 5, the diet actual- ly began to resemble some- thing in the neighborhood of a diet. There were fruit and whole grains and fish and veg- gies. The kids weren't so sure. Where were the wholesome chicken nuggets that were surely naturally in the shapes of dinosaurs? Where was the "Frozen"-shaped macaroni? If I'm not eating a noodle resem- bling Elsa's hair, what in fact am I eating? This is where blog mom- mies will say they held their foot down and their children now enjoy a well-balanced di- et. I held my foot down, and my children did something other than eat what I made. They decided to make themselves something different. For their first meal, my children made ham, peanut butter and or- ange slice sandwiches, which they dipped in applesauce and teriyaki sauce intermittently. I thought I might throw up. They, on the other hand, re- peated, "Mmm, Mama, this is better than anything you've ev- er made! " Thanks. At first, I was offended. I've tried for years to make these kids happy, and they're excit- ed about a gag-worthy mixed bowl of hummus, Cocoa Puffs and grapes? But then I was reminded that this is exact- ly what I've always wanted, to make food I like and have my children still eat — and, de- spite the awful combinations, eat fairly healthily. My daughter is current- ly screaming "Mmm! " at the top of her lungs. She is eating olives and strawberry yogurt on a hot dog bun. "Mama, you gotta try this! " No, thanks. This may be the first resolu- tion I stick to. Follow Katiedid Langrock on Instagram, at instagram.com/ writeinthewild. We Make It Personal! Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598 re- ceived no postcards or notes of interest this week. We received a note this week stating the Winslow Park Board has changed their date for meet- ings, the Community Center gym will be open on Sundays from 4-8 p.m. and all children must have their parents with them at all times, walkers may use the gym Monday 1- 3 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m.-noon. The Winslow Patoka Riv- er has water, but I don't know how much since I haven't been in that ar- ea since Sunday, January 10. It was full then, but not overflowing. Our temps have been from the 30s to 40s in the daytime and in the middle 20s to 30s at nighttime. Some mornings we woke up to frost, but not too thick and our windchills at times were frigid. In Brownstown, we have coyotes in the woods. The woods are a block away or less. I heard our neigh- borhood woodpecker in Grandma's tree and the blackbirds are swarming the ar- eas with some bluejays and cardinals. My Mom is here again since Friday, January 8 and will stay until it's fine enough for her to go back home. Satur- day, Kyana, Laura, Ted, Mom, Norm and I had a fine meal and then we played Bingo and Yahtzee for prizes. Our prizes were the $1 ones and some were the funny kind. We all had a great time. Terri Ann couldn't make it, but food was sent for her to enjoy. We had ham, veggies, bread, pumpkin and peach pie, and a strawber- ry cream cheese pie. The football games were on all day also. Sunday, Kyana stopped by, so the four of us went out for a drive in the Pike Coun- ty southern areas. We went to Pike State Forest, past Ashby Lake into Scottsburg, Stendal then Zoar, and back to Hwy 64, then home again. A f- ter we ate lunch, Kyana and I played six games of Yahtzee. She won four out of six and we both made Yahtzee with fours, fives and sixes. Kyana is doing great in school and her grades are in the A's and B's. Her school is like every school, where you learn in class or at home. One of the prizes was a 300 piece puz- zle that I worked one night. The pieces fit together until I noticed that one piece fit somewhere else. I love the hard puzzles and this one was why I picked it. Sorry to hear that Stacey McCand- less stopped being clerk-treasurer. We now have a new clerk-treasurer, Corbin Dixon. So, congratulations on this job for Winslow. We also have a new fire de- partment. There is always a story on the T V that says "go to the website to hear more on this news," but what happens if you don't have the web? The news is on for sever- al hours and why not finish that story? The internet I guess is fine, but nowa- days, you can get in deep trouble by say- ing the wrong word. The paper you got is a good way to hear the news and word of mouth is another way. So, as the lights dim for this week, keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and see all the wonders in your ar- ea. Listen to others on all topics. Wear your mask for others' safety and keep your distance. As always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week.
