Winslow Pa- toka River must be over its banks since the rain we have had last week was close to an inch and all the rivers around our Southern Indiana areas are at and over those flood stages. Many roads are al- ready closed because of the heavy rain and most areas have the barricades up but if that area always floods, then you know not to go that way. I said that last week we had lots of rain but we had some sleet Sunday morn- ing, we also had some snow flurries on Saturday morn- ing. Winslow temps again started out in the 50s but by Monday night, the 30s and 40s rolled in and on Valen- tine's Day, the temps started out with wind shills around the single digits, with temps around 25 degrees. Saturday, Feb. 8, was Arv- le Wade's service, where the Winslow Lions paid tribute, along with our district gov- ernor Sheryl Schafer, who read our Lions service and stated where Arvle had served. A carnation of what Lions stand for was present- ed to the family by Lowell, Leroy, Rosella, Jerry, Mike, Lucy, Norm and Barb. Lin- da came for the main ser- vice, where Pastor Joe and Arvle's nephew, Benjamin, spoke to us about his Arv- le. Others also spoke about knowing Arvle as a police- man, bus driver, plumber, investigating agent, fire- fighter, Winslow Lion and a friend to everyone. We all met his sisters, Wanda, Car- lon and Hazel. His brother, Fred, couldn't come. Also at- tending was another neph- ew, Billy, and Sherry, plus many people who Arvle had touched with his smile and his friendliness to everyone. The Nazarene church peo- ple prepared a fine and tasty meal for the family and his friends to eat while we en- joyed each oth- er's company in honor of Arvle. I opened up this week's pa- per and saw where William "Bill" Co- chren passed on Feb. 6, 2020, at age 92. Bill was married to Betty for 72 years and our Winslow cit- izens are saddened to hear of his passing. I also saw where James "Jim" Dickerson had passed on Feb. 4, 2020, at age 80. Jim was married to Mari- lyn for 56 years and I knew of Jay and Angie, their chil- dren. Jim had told me sto- ries of my Uncle Lawrence as they grew up in Winslow and Jim was my Sunday School teacher at Winslow General Baptist Church. Winslow citizens are al- so saddened to hear of his passing. To both of these families and their friends, remem- ber all the great times to- gether and share your mem- ories. More memories will be added to yours. Winslow will miss these great men. Valentine's Day is here but not gone, as the column will be handed in before Norm and I celebrate this day after he gets off work. We both hope that every- one had a great day, even though it was a really cold day. We hope that the love you showed to your family was from the heart and that the words of "Happy Valen- tine's Day" and "I love you" were the best gift you could have given to each other, but a $1 box of chocolates couldn't hurt either. On March 14, 2020, at the Old Town Hall build- ing, the Winslow Lions will hold a Pi Day and you could help us also. We need pies to sell pieces of on Pi Day and if you could help us out, we would be so happy. This is our first of this event and if you like the tasty dessert of pies, then this day will be right up your alley. Anoth- er thing you could do, if you will, is to tell your family and friends to mark their calen- dars for this event. More in- formation will follow in the coming weeks. The lights are about to dim on this week of roller coaster weather and a Val- entine's Day of snow-cov- ered ground, temps to start off in the teens, but with a wind chill of 2 or below ze- ro. The the temps increased to 28, then dropped again to the teens. The roller coaster temps rose again to the 40s and 50s. Winter is here or spring is here, which one? While you think about that, you can also keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see the beauty around you. Always, smile, wave and say "hi" to every- one you see this week. Items will include: Seth omas Clocks, Banjo Clocks, Wooden Wall Mount Telephones, UHL and McCoy Pottery, 41 Beer Steins, 70 Knowles Collectible Plates, Antique Shaving Mugs, H & CO.
