The school board also vot- ed to start two roofing proj- ects, one at Pike Central for the lower A wing and the other for a section of roofing over the kitchen and boiler areas of the Petersburg El- ementary School. The cost of the projects is $73,053 for Pike Central and $5,883 for Petersburg. A $ 35,000 project to paint the Pike Central gym while the old bleachers are re- moved and before new bleachers are installed was rejected. Board president Steve Potter had moved to award the contract. "We are going to have the bleachers out then. That is time to get that taken care of it," said Potter. Board member McKin- ney asked if the project had been bid. Blake said it had not been bid. She said they had requested quotes and only one firm was interest- ed in it. "I think a project of this size needs to be bid," said McKinney. Potter's motion died for lack of a second. McKinney then moved to bid the proj- ect and the board voted in favor of bidding the project. The board also voted to purchase 148 refurbished desktop computers for teachers at a price of $ 349 each for a total of $52,552, which included a $ 900 ship- ping charge. It was about half the price of buying new, which was $103,360. They also voted to purchase 42 HP Chromebooks and Google Management license from Vivacity Tech. at a cost of $7,518. In other business, they made several hires, includ- ing: Dustin Powell as high school baseball coach; Brittnay Biesterveld for the technology assistant posi- tion at PES; and Karis Mill- er to be sub for a maternity leave at PES from March 5 to April 17. Other coaching hires in- clude: Kurt Vaughn as paid varsity softball assistant; Sa- mantha Halbrader as paid JV Coach; Wil Teague as girls' varsity track assistant; Eric Knight as paid boys' track varsity assistant; Joe Cham- berlain as paid boys' varsity track assistant; Noah Ony- ett as volunteer assistant for boys' golf; Brandon Hartke as paid golf assistant, pend- ing roster numbers; Jill Keepes as girls; tennis paid varsity assistant, pending roster numbers; JJ Howald as paid assistant baseball coach; Chaney McKinney as paid middle school swim boys' assistant; and Jared Simmons as volunteer as- sistant. Peter and Paul $ 300. Kindergarten and Pre- school roundup in Pike County is set to begin on March 12. Children must be five years old by August 1, 2020, to be eligible for kindergar- ten next school year or four years old by August 1, 2020, to be eligible for preschool next school year. Winslow Elementary School Kindergarten round-up is set for Thursday, March 12. Evening appointments are available. Preschool round-up will be from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 13. Goble is 4-H Health and Human Sciences Extension Educator Brooke Goble is the new 4-H and Health and Human Sciences Extension Educa- tor for Pike County. A native of Walkerton, Brooke grew up on a Dairy farm and was an active 10 -year 4-H member. This was where her passion for influencing youths began. Brooke obtained her Bachelor's degree from In- diana State University in Family and Consumer Sci- ence Education with a mi- nor in Food and Nutrition. This was also where she met her husband, and they currently reside in Vin- cennes. Brooke's husband is a Sheriff's Deputy in Da- viess County. Brooke is excited to get started and to hopeful- ly make a difference in the community. Brooke Goble as someone who had sever- al years in a similar position. The difference between ti- er 1 and tier 2 was five per- cent. Dillon and Atkins said the person was taking a pay cut as it was. They also said it was tough to attract people to work in the position be- cause it paid so much less than similar positions in oth- er counties. Councilman Travis Trout- man moved to approve. It was seconded by Todd Meadors and approved by a 7-0 vote. In other business, the council voted to change their agenda policy. They voted to not allow any chang- es after the Wednesday pre- ceding their Tuesday meet- ing. The next council meeting is 8:30 a.m Tuesday, March 10 in the courthouse rotun- da. Fair queens participate in enrollment Several Pike County 4-H fair queens attended the Pike County 4-H enrollment round-up pancake breakfast on Saturday morning. The queens (l to r) Sabree McDowell, Peyton Willis, Abigail Sutt (hold- ing D. J. Stafford), Kassandra Evans, Jessa Ridao and Lauren Young were to talk to other kids about 4-H. Anyone from kindergarten to seniors in high school can participate in 4-H. There are 11 clubs in Pike County. Contact the Pike County Extension Office at 812-789-6838 for more information. Polar Plunge is Feb. 29 in Petersburg Prides Creek Manager Brandon Schultheis, Plunger the Polar Bear and Francie Smith of Special Olym- pics Indiana are at Prides Creek Beach, which will host the Sixth Annual Pike Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 29. at noon. Smith said this year's event already is by far the biggest Plunge yet in Pike Coun- ty. She said more than 200 plungers have signed up. The previous biggest event was about 160 plungers. Registration is online now until February 29. People can also register from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event at Prides Creek Beach. Plungers need to raise $75 in donations to participate. There is also an After Splash Bash at the Gospel Center Activities Center.
