The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 4, 2019 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg in the nursing facilities. I hope they have fun with us as we take on the carols. If I'm not wrong we will play at seven nursing fa- cilities in Dec. That is a lot of singing but we have fun doing what we do and we re- ally feel like the residents have fun too. Our Sunday school teacher was out with pneumonia last Sunday. Her sister filled in for her and taught a lesson about the Sab- bath day. God commanded us to work six days and rest on the seventh. The Israelites were put to death for working on the Sabbath. As far as I know there is no punishment for us if we do work on the Sabbath. I sure hope so be- cause my career at IPL had many Sundays where we worked. Even then I did my best to refresh myself some through the day. I was honest with my employer, but I was as loyal to God as much as possible. When God said rest I feel strongly He wanted us to refresh our bodies and re- focus our minds so we would be more productive individuals and make being a Christian look appealing enough for oth- ers to accept Jesus. The scripture lesson was an expose of Romans 14. We found we are to accept others as brothers and sisters in Christ even though they do worship differently and they interpret things differently. Just because we aren't all alike doesn't mean one of us is wrong. You don't judge others but you lift each other up and encourage one another. There is lots more to being a Christian than just being correct over the smaller issues and that is living a righteous life in peace with yourself and others. Enjoy- ing your life with Jesus calmly and con- fidently. Well as per usual go out today and strive to be blessing and receive as many bless- ing as you can. In Romans 4:1,2 the Apostle Paul de- clares that Abraham was the father, not of his physical offspring alone, but also of those who "walk in the steps of that faith" which Abraham had. Have you ever noticed that God does not hold the great men of Scripture up to us be- cause of their personal virtues? Almost in- variably their records are marred by failure and sin. But God bids us observe their faith and what their faith gained for them (See Romans 4:3,9,11,12). There is a whole chapter on this sub- ject in the Book of Hebrews. Hebrews 11 is properly called "the great faith chapter," and its heroes "heroes of faith," for it tells how Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ja- cob and scores of others "obtained a good report" before God. They all faltered and failed again and again, but Hebrews 11:39 declares that "these all… obtained a good report through faith." This is why Romans 4:9 -12 states that God's blessing is bestowed upon those who "walk in the steps of that faith" which Abra- ham exhibited, just as it was bestowed up- on Abraham himself. This truth is driven home in Verses 3 to 5 of the same chapter: "For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. "Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. "But to him that worketh not, but be- lieveth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness" (Ro- mans 4:3-5). Stam A spiritual awakening needed Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Today, we have a moral and spiritual cri- sis in our nation. Distrust and dishonesty is at an all time high in government. Church- es are abandoning the absolutes and life- changing power of the Gospel. Divorce has increased four fold in the last 50 years. To- day more than one half of marriages end in divorce. Will America be able to survive this so- cial agenda and moral crisis? Will Ameri- ca become a secular government-run coun- try like many European countries? Can we expect honesty and truthfulness from our President and Congress? The answer to these questions gives us cause for concern. In this difficult period America needs a spiritual rebirth. This will only come when America returns to our Constitution and pastors speak the truth and challenge peo- ple to let their walk match their religious talk. Millions of church going people look to their clergy for direction and the affir- mation of Biblical truth. Many are won- dering, "What ever became of sin? " They need to hear words like repent, forgiveness, changed lives and ho- ly living. The culture should not dominate the church but the church should influ- ence a pagan culture. The pastor should have the moral cour- age to tell the truth and help people out of their spiritual wil- derness of doubt and confusion. I wonder what the results would be, for the chaos we are in, if every pastor would call their people to prayer and repentance. Our political and moral problems are so great that only a spiritual rebirth can save our nation from secularism. Secularism has always been an enemy of the church and Christian living. The corrupt politicians have led us into moral decline and socialism but Godly leaders in the church can lead us back to joy, faith, peace and security in both time and eternity. Time for another week of rambling thoughts from a rambling mind. I've been told by a friend he really enjoys what he reads, but my mind doesn't seem to rest. I suppose it was a compliment. Oh well here goes please read and enjoy. What's up at Washington Walmart with the checking of receipts, because it would be impossible to steal a cart of merchan- dise. I can't see checking everyone's re- ceipt like they do at Sam's club and I can see where you might be able to get by with heisting a cart full of stuff. I suppose someone could put something in a buggy that has already gone through check out but checking a receipt would be a remote chance at catching a shoplifter so I guess we will be showing our receipts from now on. It's a little unhandy, but everyone is go- ing through it. So it is fair and it has be- come their policy. So I guess that's that. Well I bought a new toy last week from Amazon.com through one of my friends. It is a Banjitar and it sounds like a banjo but plays like a six string guitar. It's a bit hard to get used to the sound. The round shape is a little difficult to keep on your lap. Since it plays like a guitar I can play I can make it sound decent, but I need to work on it. You know we can do most things if we put our minds to it. You know the way time is flying, it seems as though it was July yesterday and it is 20 some days until Christmas. It just doesn't feel like Christmas season and I think it is because our years have just gone so quickly we don't have enough time to enjoy the seasons. Steve and I have a whole notebook of Christmas songs to share with our friends Continued on page 2 RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N. The angel went to her and said 'Greetings, you who are highly favored. The Lord is with you.' Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Je- sus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, and he will IMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH SBC 295 West Main Street Petersburg Church 812-354-9659 Pastor 812-890-9942 Email: awordfitlyspoken@ outlook.com MT.
