"Like the varsity game, we were close and they pulled away at the end," Pike Central junior varsity coach Josh Roach said. "I was very pleased with the effort all the way through. We made some mental mistakes, but they are learning. We had too many turnovers and gave up too many of- fensive rebounds, but that's on me be- cause I haven't emphasized those as- pects enough. I have been focused on their effort and togetherness, and I was thrilled with those things." The Chargers were led by Alex Clark's 17 points. Connor Young fin- ished with four. Shane Morson, Jaylen Mills, Kendrick Sorgius and Peyton Howald each scored two. The team hosted Southridge on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and travels to Princ- eton on Saturday, Dec. 7. "They will get better at the other things as we go along," Roach said. "But I felt effort and togetherness were the main priorities to get them to their long-term goals. If those become hab- its, the other aspects of the game are just tweaks. It will be very interesting to see this team grow all year long." FRESHMEN GET DOUBLED UP Things were equally if not even rougher for the Pike Central fresh- men team, which fell 56 -28. "We did not do a very good job of tak- ing care of the basketball or playing de- fense," Pike Central freshmen coach Joe Chamberlain said. "This started hurting us in the second quarter. It was a five-point game after the first quarter. We ending up having more turnovers than made shots and giving up 56 points in 24 minutes is way too much. We also had a lot of unnecessary fouls, which factored into their 28 free throw attempts. Working on communi- cation and staying disciplined on both ends of the floor will be a focal point for this group going forward." The Chargers have potential, but they just have to continue working on their weaknesses. Kendric Sorgius led Pike Central with nine points and made some good plays down the stretch, but Chamber- lain said he wanted to highlight Bra- den Howald. "His energy kept us going and he ac- crued 14 hustle points for the game," Chamberlain said. "Hustle points are steals, forced turnover, offensive re- bound, taking a charge, making the ex- tra pass, applying good ball pressure and getting on the floor for loose balls. He was doing the uncommon things in uncommon ways, that's our program motto. If we can get everyone to play with that kind of energy, we are going to be tough to beat." Jagar Dent, Braden Howald and Pey- ton Howald each finished the game with five points. Peyton Chanley had three and Bryce Knepp scored one. Josiah Stevens (11), Noah Betz (10) and Peyton Betz (10) all finished the game in double digits for the Jeeps. The freshman team hosted South- ridge on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The Char- gers will host South Spencer on Thurs- day, Dec. 5, and be at Forest Park on Tuesday, Dec. 10. ting to the foul line and attack- ing the basket," Elliott said. "He settled for some shots that we aren't really looking to take. He has the ability to be one of the best players in the ar- ea and we are going to continue to help him get there." Guth added four rebounds and two assists to his eight points, which he got on 3-of- 4 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 shooting from behind the 3-point line. The rest of the team shot a combined 1-of- 14 from the field, with Ethan Gorby making the team's on- ly other shot. Gorby finished with three points and had sev- en rebounds. "I was very pleased with Ethan Gorby on the glass," El- liott said. "But we need him to be more aggressive offensive- ly." Sean Hanselman added two points and Colin Craig had one point. "We have watched film as a staff and a team, and broke down areas where we need to improve," Elliott said. "This was a good opportunity for us that we let slip away, so we need to make sure we learn from it."
