C-2 Church Wednesday, December 4, 2019 The Press-Dispatch FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH 1400 E. Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 Regular services: Sunday school 9:30 a.m. and worship service and the Lord's Sup- per at 10 :30 a.m. When I first moved to Pe- tersburg from Atlanta, I had to get used to a lot of new things. One of them was learning my destinations. I learned there weren't a lot of signs, especially on I-69, so I started paying attention to things that marked my route, to know where I was, to judge how far I was. This became especially handy on my way home. You see, it's easy when you drive for a while to just look ahead, and loose track. This week, PAWS is fea- turing an agile young gal named Macy, who is a very slender and finely boned dog, may have some Grey- hound heritage, is very af- fectionate and playful, and would settle happily into a family routine. She has a short, smooth coat of tan fur, with a white beauty mark on her head and soul- ful brown eyes that convey warmth and gentleness, has all her shots, is spayed and anxiously awaiting to be adopted. Call 812-354- 9894 to adopt Macy. PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the MACY Catholic ARTHUR G.B. CHURCH 5670 S. For he has rescued us out of the darkness and gloom of Satan's kingdom, and brought us into the king- dom of his dear Son, who bought our freedom with his blood and forgave us all our sins" (Colossians 1: 11-14, LB). We thank God for send- ing the glorious, saving gift of his son, Jesus, so we can live in the light of his glorious love. Pass it on. We invite you to worship with us. It was a huge success; we will be eager to have another community dinner next year at Thanksgiving again. As I always say, everything we do is because we love Je- sus and love people. Good intentions by the Christian without regular- ity before God's altar are just as injurious to Christ's family as good intentions by husband and wife in a home without faithfulness to fam- ily duties would be." Nevertheless the Bible says, "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works. A cou- ple of times, not paying at- tention I missed the Peters- burg exit, and I was halfway to Washington. But then, I started looking for things to judge where I was. The smokestacks became espe- cially helpful. When I saw the billows of smoke rising into the air, day or night, I knew Pike County was close, my Petersburg exit was approaching. The Psalmist writes this about God's word, that is scripture; "your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path" (119:105). We need a light for our path in this world, as the world seems darker, it's easy to lose fo- cus and miss our direction. We need to be watchful in our lives and we need to cul- tivate our relationship with the Lord through prayer and his word. Everyone welcome. Winslow Pastor 812-239-6843 Sunday morning church service at 10 a.m. and Sun- day school 11 a.m. As is our usual custom, this is the time of year that we focus on our blessings and being thankful to the LORD who provided them. What we do with the bless- ings that God has given is of- ten a window of insight that reveals the true spirit and at- titude of our hearts. I remember talking to a friend many years ago who said he saw a man in church dumping handfuls of pock- et change into the offering plate. Then after the ush- er had already moved on to the next pew the man start- ed waving his arms excited- ly trying to get the usher's attention because he found one more penny to put in the plate. You might think that was an awful lot of fuss to make over one penny but it really comes into perspec- tive when you find out the PETERSBURG HOLINESS CHURCH Pastor 419-340- 5500 (C) Parsonage 812- 354-9446 Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship and spe- cial junior church service at 10 :30 a.m.; Jr. Church theme: "Christmas"; eve- ning worship 6:30 p.m.; weekly Wednesday night prayer meeting at 7 p.m. Transportation available. Our hope in Christ for the future is the mainstay of our joy here. It will animate our hearts to think often of Heaven, for all that we can desire is promised there. Here we are weary and toil worn, but yonder is the land of rest where the sweat of la- bor shall no more cover the worker's brow, and fatigue shall be forever banished. To those who are weary and spent, the word "rest" is full of Heaven. We are al- ways in the field of battle; we are tempted within, and mo- lested by foes without that we have little peace. But in Heaven, the banner of victo- ry shall be waved aloft in tri- umph, and the sword shall be sheathed, and we shall hear our Captain say, "Well done, good and faithful ser- vant." Nevertheless, let it nev- er be said of us, that we are dreaming about the fu- ture and forgetting the pres- ent. Let the future sanctify the present to highest uses. The man who has the hope of Heaven in him goes about his work with vigor, for the joy of the Lord is his strength. He fights against tempta- tion with ardor, for the hope of the next world repels the fiery darts of the adversary. He can labor without present reward, for he looks for a re- ward in the world to come. That very well could have been his last penny and to think he was so excited about giving it away. What about you? If God were to search every recess of your heart would he find such a generous spirit and grateful attitude? Perhaps it's time that we take a se- rious look within ourselves and see all the blessings that surround us. Maybe then we will spend less time and en- ergy concerned about what we don't have and become more thankful and generous with what we do have.
