We received no postcards this week at Sweets Col- umn, Winslow, IN 47598. Winslow Patoka River is almost full and the lit- tle rain we had last Mon- day wasn't enough to make it rise. We also had these mornings of frost and some days were heavy frost that stayed in the a.m. hours. We did have rain in the form of driz- zle that brought into our area colder weather and they also said snow flur- ries north of I-64. I know it's fall and I'm just like some others who want to feel the fall temps and it's too soon to feel the winter-like 20s temp that should come in the winter. Norm and I went out to get more firewood, but this time, we cut down some marked trees and then cut them up in chunks. That was an amazing time we had together. When we left for the day, it looked like we were not there, but we hauled in a half truck load, then there were more trees al- ready cut down and that was another half load, but we are not done. I haven't seen our friendly neigh- borhood deer and I hope it's okay and not been hunted. It was still young. Our squirrel is still getting the wal- nuts because I have seen it carry the nut across they yard and then he sets in one of the trees and eats it. I take he has hidden some but I haven't seen him do that yet. There have been coyotes heard and also seen in our town, but they haven't been heard lately and that's just fine unless they are the friendly kind al- so. Hopeful thinking from me. Ted, Terri Ann and Mom went shopping the other day and then they stopped to eat at Petersburg Fish Hut for Mom's other birthday gift. Oh, did I tell you all what kind of cake was made for Mom on Halloween? Well, it wasn't a cake but a pumpkin pie that was decorated and some can- dles to blow out, this is her favorite pie and I thought it was a pecan pie or raisin pie. Terr Ann has been here for close to a week or more, but she and Mom have gone through loads of pic- tures of families and friends as they try to get them in an album. I went to the Spurgeon Monroe Fire Dept. meeting, where we will have the drawing for the 65" T V on December 15 at 6 p.m. at the station house. You can enter their drawing by contacting any Spurgeon-Monroe firefighter or auxiliary member. The Second Annual Coat Wrap still needs "like-new" coats of all sizes, then around December, the coats will be wrapped around sign posts, light poles and draped on benches for anyone who is in need of a coat. So, if you have a coat to donate to this cause, you can bring them to the Cor- ner Book Shoppe and they will get them to the Coat Wrap organizers for the Town of Winslow. Last year, there were 85 coats donated. The Winslow Lions had their Thanksgiving meal and meeting where the guest of honor was Lions District Governor Sheryl Schafer, from Bloomfield. She and her hus- band, Jeff, have raised and trained leader dogs for those who need a companion to help them around the house and assist them to board a bus, train or to get across the street. The meal was very delicious with turkey, dressing and all the fixings made by each of the members. We had 21 members and guests to en- joy our evening and see Pres. Leroy receive a Rosie the Riveter Lion pin from D.G. Sheryl Schafer. Pictures were taken of Rosella and Jerry, who received their Chevron 15 -year Char- ter pin. There were five other mem- bers who will receive that same pin and they were not there. We all had a real good time and if you would like to join in on all the fun we have through the year, our next meeting is November 21 at 7 p.m. and you can be my guest. On December 7, Winslow Christ- mas Parade will begin at 10 a.m. with Santa Claus, then the Mouse House is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and Winslow Winter Wonderland will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m., December 14 times are 1-3 p.m. and December 21 times are 1-3 p.m., with Santa Claus to see the children on December 14 and 21. More infor- mation to follow. The lights are about to dim on this week, but keep an eye on family and friends to be sure they are warm with these cold nights or just to sit and listen to what they have to say. Slow down and see all the beauty around your area and stop for school buses. Oh yes, there was a sighting in Hunt- ingburg of Arvil Wade. As always, smile, wave and say hi to everyone you see this week. mance review or negotia- tion meeting." Keeping this list shouldn't be difficult. It will fit on the back of a postage stamp. Even so, waiting for a review leaves months when management doesn't know how wonderful you are. Better to update your manager with a constant barrage of achievements. Here are a few examples: "I woke up this morn- ing." "That report you as- signed me last month? I've written a whole sentence! " "I changed my socks." Follow up each an- nouncement by asking, "Will you promote me now? " You'll wear them down sooner or later — and then you won't have to change your socks. No. 5: You're not open to feedback and criticism. A leader must demon- strate "the ability to take constructive feedback and criticism." Instead of putting your fingers in your ears and singing "Shake It Off" while your manager goes through the litany of your faults and failures, prove that the message has been received. Cry. Breaking down in bitter sobs at the slight- est criticism may not seem like the right posture for a future leader, but it just could make your manager feel guilty. A mercy promotion may not be what you wanted, but you can still cash the checks. Bob Goldman was an ad- vertising executive at a For- tune 500 company.
