The Press-Dispatch School Wednesday, November 13, 2019 C- 9 SADD Club members Cassidy Perry, Han- nah Brackney, Carlie Perry, Easton Bailey, Em- ma Brock and Hannah Fort in front of a bulletin board they created with this year's Red Ribbon Week Theme: "Send A Message. Stay Drug Free." A few students participating in the homeless unit in Mrs. Bohnert's English class visited Somebody's Place on Nov. 5 to volunteer. Students helped move boxes and begin setting up for the Christmas sea- son. Students also received a tour of the facilities and learned about the operations of Somebody's Place. Pictured are Jerzey Reibold, MaKayla Thorne, Ethan Hill and Samuel Haycraft. Left: Students in Mr. James DeCrane's Spanish classes celebrated the Day of the Dead last week. The Spanish Club (Sar- ah Lane, Nakiah Hickey, Josh McHargue, Sam Haycraft, Samantha Perry and Reece Ashley) helped to decorate the classroom for the full effect of the tradition. El Día de los Muertos is a big holiday in Mexico as a day of remembering loved ones. Stu- dents at Pike Central learn about this hol- iday and also look at the common connec- tions shared amongst all cultures of how to mourn the loss of a loved one. As an assignment, students will create some- thing to remember a lost loved one, pet or a famous person from history. These will be added to the displays to remem- ber throughout the month of November. Realizing a dream takes commitment, hard work, and, most often, a helping hand from fam- ily and others. And that's exactly what 30 stu- dents from Indiana's private, non-profit colleges and universities were celebrated for at the 30th Annual Realizing the Dream banquet. Oakland City University chose former Pike Central stand- out Taylor Deffendoll as this year's recipient. Def- fendoll is a Criminal Justice major at OCU, where she serves as a Student Government senator and the Criminal Justice Student Association presi- dent and treasurer. She is the daughter of Jeremy and Jennifer Deffendoll, of Winslow. Each hon- ored student received a $3,000 check to help with college costs, and each student's selected "most influential" teacher/mentor received a $1,000 professional development grant. Deffendoll chose Pike Central Criminal Justice teacher Chad Mc- Clellan as her most influential teacher. Deffendoll and McClellan were honored at the Realizing the Dream banquet held in Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 2.
