The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, November 13, 2019 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg lots of sicknesses visiting for the Lord and praise God I don't think I ever came down with anything when visiting the sick. But we sure never tempt God just for the sake of proving something because I feel God has also been the author of "COMMON SENSE". We were just talking about why the leaves seem to be hanging on in the trees longer this year and now we don't have to wonder as they have changed the color of our yards as they all seemed to fall at once. It was good to be in church at Velpen. Sunday morning we even had four new folks come in to worship with us. The church at Velpen is on its way out if we don't get some help from the people around us so it was so good to have this family come in. I hope and pray they felt welcome and will want to come back. Sunday school lesson concerned people thinking they had to do certain things to be forgiven and they had to line up with others to be forgiven. This is not true as the only way to the Father is through Je- sus and nothing to do with man except to seek forgiveness and to accept grace from the Father. It sounds simple and it is, but we always make it hard. Living the life is harder because we must follow God's lead and humans usually have trouble following. The scripture lesson was about "unclean spirits" and how they are afraid of Jesus so to we should always keep our hearts full of the Savior so there is no room for un- cleanness. Bad thoughts, thoughts of ven- genance, or just plain evil thinking are not sins until you put action to them and walk- ing in the Spirit helps to keep these trou- bles from causing us problems. While we are out in the world search- ing for people to help we usually pass up the very person God put in our paths who needs us. Okay be a blessing and be blessed. I almost forgot to mention one of the boys who was at church Sunday asked if he could share a word with us next Sunday so he will be speaking for a few moments. Has the cashier at the restaurant or the check-out girl at the supermart been ask- ing you: "Do you have the two cents? " or "You don't have the change, do you? " If so, it's because there is a coin shortage all over the U.S. and will be for some time. All kinds of coin-using machines have created a shortage of coins for other pur- poses. Isn't it strange: a penny is hardly worth picking up these days, and Presi- dent Eisenhower called our dollars "dol- larettes," yet people seem to be spending more money in small amounts. You can make more and more purchas- es with coins these days. Some people say that you can buy anything with money, but they're wrong — very wrong. The things we need most cannot be bought with any amount of money. The air we breathe, the water we drink (we pay only for the service), love of family and friends. These things can't be bought. And the most precious treasure of all: salvation, eternal life, can't be bought at any price. God doesn't want our money. He calls it "filthy lucre." He's not going into busi- ness, selling houses and lots in heaven, much less will He pervert justice and pro- nounce us innocent for a consideration. But He does pity and love us and He can and will give us eternal life if we trust in the merits of the One who died to pay the pen- alty for our sins. "The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Rom. 6:23). "For by grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God" (Eph. 2:8). Our Lord said to the Samaritan woman: "If thou knewest the gift of God… thou wouldest have asked…" ( John 4:10). Have you asked? Stam Distortions in Religion Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin One often wonders why most press cov- erage on religion is done by non-religious people. This may be the reason so much we read in secular magazines, and social me- dia, and see on T V has little resemblance to what the Bible teaches, and Christian lead- ers believe. Every thinking person has made some kind of a decision about God. Most have wondered if there is an organizing intelli- gence that created our universe and made man. Most have looked at the various reli- gions and chosen to believe one. The one thing that has been constant throughout history has been man's belief in God. Most people believe God plays an important role in their life. It is said that a few unbeliev- ers do most of the religious reporting in the press. Could this be by evil design? Poll after poll tells us America is a coun- try where people have strong belief in God. Even though a few scientists teach there is no real personal God more than 90 % say they have nev- er doubted the ex- istence of God. The overwhelming ma- jority believes in life after death and eight in ten believe God still works mir- acles. A recent study shows the majority of our college students say they pray. Most Americans say God is important in their lives. The great need among religious people is that their walk should match their talk. Our lifestyle as Christians should reflect hon- esty, integrity, neighborliness and faithful- ness in our daily prayer and Bible reading. The church has a strong obligation to op- pose the evil in our culture and teach peo- ple to live moral lives and be different from those who reject God. Last week I started out kind of drained of energy and the aches and pains from the previous week were still plaguing me. I was able to help unload the pantry truck Monday morning, but it left me tired. I sure think Tom Thorne must stay up at nights thinking of ways to make things easier be- cause he has came up with a conveyor sys- tem to aid in unloading the pantry truck. We were able to try it last Monday and it sure speeded up the process. I've been up to helping with the Christ- mas in the Park decorations about three or four days. I enjoy erecting them and do- ing the physical labor required to ensure they don't get blown down in some of the winds they will be subjected to in the next couple of months. I'm not sure, but I be- lieve most of the physical work has been accomplished and it is now in the hands of the electric minded guys to get them all burning. Thursday morning I took a friend and her daughter to Evansville in a dark rainy drive so my friend could have her last cat- aract surgery completed. She had her sur- gery done by Talley eye surgeons and there is no fuss or mess because they just do your surgery and it is that simple. My friend has had both eyes done now and she can real- ly see lots better. It seems as though this is going to be bad year for sickness because our grand- son has had stomach distress for about three days now and his parents are down with whatever it is. Mamaw is coming down with it now so you know the drill it will not stop until we have all had it. I cancelled an entertainment spot Sunday afternoon as I didn't know if I would be a carrier or not. We were able to have church Sunday be - cause it is always cool in the church and not likely to pass things on. I've been in the ministry since 1985 and been around Continued on page 2 PETERSBURG CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE 118 W Pike Ave., Petersburg • 812-354-8851 FREE COMMUNITY SOUP SUPPER WEDNESDAY November 20 4:00-5:30 PM SOUP AND DESSERTS SERVED Parking in rear ALL ARE WELCOME!
