The Press-Dispatch B-3 Wednesday, February 13, 2013 Slow starts hamper the Charger boys By Mike Johansen The Pike Central Chargers had two good second half performances, but that was not enough to overcome two games where they scored 17 points total in the first half that resulted in two losses last week. The Chargers hosted Tecumseh Thursday and lost 42-34 and on Saturday were at South Spencer for a makeup game and lost 57-48. We had two bad first half performances in three games in a row (going back to Vincennes Lincoln). We have not been able to adjust to the speed of the game early on and then we cannot catch up. We have not been able to match their intensity and then we cant catch up, said Pike Central Head Coach John Mokris. We played well in the second half in both games, but its too late by then. We cannot come back on teams like that. We had 8 turnovers in the first quarter and 14 in the first half and then we had 2 in the second half. We also were 1 for 15 from three point range. We have not been able to play 32 minutes and that has been our big problem. We need to do something to get up to speed a lot faster. I am proud of how well we played in the second half in both games, but we have to get started sooner. That is the big question we have to figure out, how we can get started faster. The big difference between the two games is that the Chargers did score in the first quarter in the 42-34 loss to the Tecumseh braves last Thursday. However, that was only a three point difference compared to the next game. Pike Central has had five points total in the first quarter in the past three games. The points came against Tecumseh after they had given up eight points. Tyler Toopes had a basket and Kegan Aldridge a free throw. The Chargers had the second basket of the second period as Chris Downey hit an inside shot. They went a minute and a half before Tyler Garland made a short shot. The only good thing is the Pike Central defense did not give up a lot of points, allowing only 8 in the first period and 11 in the second. The Chargers were down 19-7 at halftime. The third period started much better with Downey hitting a shot off a pass from Garland and then Garland went beyond the arch to nail a three pointer and then went inside for a two to quickly cut the difference to five points, 14-19 with 5:02 remaining. Tecumseh took a time out, but then missed a shot and Garland made his third basket of the period for a one point difference. The Braves finally nailed a three, their first basket of the third quarter, with 1:48 to play. Trevor Claridge countered with a 12 foot jumper for two, but the Braves closed the scoring in the third quarter with two free throws to lead 24-20. The Braves kept up the pressure and had PC off balance to start the final period. Pike Central missed a couple of shots and the Braves made the first three baskets to regain the edge 30-20. PC came back with two free throws by Claridge and two by Garland to again be within six. A minute later, a Garland basket had the game down to four points, 26-30 with 4:16 remaining. The game went into slow motion with the Braves countering with a lay-up and some delaying tactics. A three with 2:41 remaining had the Braves on top 35-26. Pike Central turned the ball over and the Braves stretched the lead to 11. Downey finally made a free throw after more than two minutes without a point, but Tecumseh came back for two free throws and a 39-27 lead with 1:45 to play. Baskets by Downey and Toopes had the final margin at eight points, 42-34. Tyler Garland had 13 points and Downey 9 to lead the Chargers. Downey had 13 rebounds, Garland 5, Toopes 5 and Aldridge 4. Shaine Eck had two assists and Claridge two. Eck and Garland each had two steals. Pike Central 34, Tecumseh 42: Shaine Eck 0,0,00,1,2,0; Tyler Toopes 1,1,00,2,5,5; Kegan Aldridge 0,0,1-2,5,4,1; Chris Downey 4,0,1-3,0,13,9; Tyler Garland 4,1,2-4,3,5,13; Dustin Meny 0,0,0-0,1,0,0; Trevor Claridge 1,0,4-4,3,3,6; Garrett Elliott 0,0,0-0,0,0,0; PC totals: 12-40 (2), 8-13, 14, 32, 34; Tecumseh totals: 12-33 (3), 1521, 14, 22, 42. Turnovers PC: 22, Tecumseh 16. The second game of the week was no better in the first half as the Chargers trailed 14-0 before they got started in a 57-48 loss to the South Spencer Rebels Saturday afternoon at South Spencer. The Chargers put up only five shots in the opening quarter of play and had eight turnovers. They gave up 12 points to trail 12-0 at the end of the opening period. The Rebels made the first basket of the second period for a 14-0 lead before Toopes made two free throws with 4:11 to go in a slow scoring second quarter. Toopes made another basket a short time later for a 14-4 score. The Rebels came back with a 10-2 run, only two free throws by Aldridge interrupting, to lead 24-6. The Chargers finally answered with a Toopes basket with 1:27 left before halftime. Downey and Meny added free throws for a 26-10 halftime score, the Rebels on top. The early going of the NETedition Exclusive video Trevor Claridge, 30, finds just enough of an opening to shoot against the Tecumseh Braves at home on Thursday. Chris Downey is there to help. third period was even with baskets by Aldridge and Garland answered by South Spencer. Toopes started a 7-2 run for the Chargers with a three point play followed by two baskets by Aldridge for a 33-21 count with about four minutes left in the third frame. South Spencer had a 8-1 run to regain a big edge, 41-22. Aldridge nailed a three to end the spree. A three point play by Claridge and two baskets by Claridge to end the third period had the Chargers down only 14, 46-32. The Rebels came back with the first four points of the final period, The Chargers answered with two free throws by Downey and baskets from Aldridge and Toopes to pull within 12, 5038. After a South Spencer miss, Garland made a shot for a 10 point difference. The Rebels made a free throw, but Garland came back with another short shot for a nine point margin, 51-42, with 2:06 remaining. The Chargers got the ball back and it was Garland again making a shot for a 51-44 count. The Chargers got the ball back, but turned it over and had to foul. The Rebels made all six of its free throws during the final minute of play. PC had two free throws by Eck and a basket by Aldridge, but that was only enough for the nine point final difference. PC had 38 points the second half. They had 12 field goal tries the first half and 34 the second. Aldridge had 15 points, Toopes 11 and Garland 8. Toopes had six rebounds, Aldridge four, Downey five and Claridge four. Aldridge had two assists and four steals, Meny two steals and Garrett Elliott two.
