To qualify for the Dean���s List, a student must complete at least 12 credit hours and achieve a grade point index of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. Wiscaver named to USI dean���s list Michaela W iscaver of Petersburg has been named to the University of Southern Indiana dean���s list for the 2012 fall semester. Michaela is a freshman and majoring in nursing. While at USI, she is active in choir. Michaela is the daughter of Charlie and Joy Wiscaver and granddaughter of Connie Anderson and great-granddaughter of Velasta, Morris all of Petersburg. Indiana Sheriff���s Association to award college scholarships Pike County Sheriff Jeremy Britton recently announced that the Indiana Sheriffs��� Association will again be awarding college scholarships to qualified high school seniors or college students who are pursuing a degree in criminal justice studies. There will be approximately 40 ��� $500 scholarships awarded to qualifying students throughout the state. The Indiana Sheriffs��� Association Scholarship Fund was established for the purpose of receiving, investing and dispensing of funds to provide college scholarships to qualified students who are committed to pursuing an education and career in the law enforcement field. To qualify for one of these scholarships, the applicant must be an Indiana resident, be a current Pike Central welders win regional contest Pike Central High School Vocational Welding students took the top five places at the Region 4 Skills USA Welding Contest held at Vincennes University on this past Saturday, continuing the streak of excellence in competition for the program. Nine Pike Central Vocational Welding students competed with Pike Central junior Dakota Lee placing first. Dakota received a tuition scholarship for one semester in a College of Technology program at Vincennes University. Placing second was Forest Park junior Wes Weyer. Third was Pike Central senior Clinton Popp. Placing fourth was Pike Central senior Brandon Barragan. Placing fifth was Jasper Senior Clayton Greener. The top five students from each region will advance to the State Contest that will be held at Walker Career Center in Indianapolis on April 19-20. The state winner will represent the State of Indiana at the National Contest during the last week in June in Kansas City. Pike Central High School welding students brought home a lot of hardware from the Regional contest at Vincennes University. They include (l to r): Clayton Greener, fifth place; Dakota Lee, first place; Clinton Popp, third place; Brandon Barragan, fourth place; and Wes Weyer, second place. Students were evaluated on the following: 151 question welding theory written test; SMAW process to do a vertical ���V��� groove butt joint using an E6010 electrode for the root pass and an E7018 electrode for the fill and cover passes; GTAW process to do a horizontal square groove butt joint; and the GMAW process to do a flat tee joint, lap joint and a square groove butt joint. Smokefree pregnancies workshop slated for Feb. 19 High School Academy offered at Hanover College June 9-14 Hanover College will offer its Summer High School Academy June 914. This is a great opportunity for current high school students to experience the life of a college student for a week by staying in dormitories, eating in the campus cafeteria and attending classes taught by Hanover College professors who are experts in the various fields. The High School Academy also offers hands-on experience that will help engage and expand scholars interests as well as deepen their knowledge of a topic. The Press-Dispatch member of the association or a dependent child or grandchild of a current member of the association, attend an Indiana college or university, major in a law enforcement field and enroll as a fulltime student (12 hours). Applications needed to apply for the scholarships are available from your high school counselor, the sheriff���s office or by writing to the Indiana Sheriffs��� Association, 147 East Maryland Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204-3608, and requesting an application form. The scholarship application can also be downloaded from the Indiana Sheriffs��� Association website: www.indianasheriffs.org. The applications must be completed and received by the Indiana Sheriffs��� Association on or before April 1. Local health care providers, social service professionals and other health advocates are invited to attend a free workshop, ���Champions for Smokefree Pregnancies��� in Vincennes, on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Eva Hill Auditorium at Good Samaritan Hospital. The event is hosted by the Daviess County Tobacco Prevention Coalition in partnership with Promoting Smokefree Pregnancies in Indiana (PSPI). The PSPI coalition, a statewide partner of the Indiana State Department of Health Tobac- co Prevention and Cessation Commission, is comprised of agencies and individuals across Indiana dedicated to reducing the prevalence of smoking among women of childbearing age, particularly during pregnancy. In Indiana, approximately 17 percent of pregnant women smoke, nearly twice the national average. Smoking during pregnancy is associated with a number of negative physical and mental outcomes including premature birth, low birth weight, asthma, and problems with learning and reading, among many others. The Feb. 19 event will introduce participants to effective tools and techniques for providing tobacco cessation support to their patients and clients, with special emphasis on pregnant women. Participants also will hear from local respiratory therapist Tammy Howell, CRT and Kerri Barrett, RN, with the Prenatal Substance Use Prevention Program (PSUPP) at Tri-Cap. ���Tobacco cessation can be a sensitive topic to discuss with patients and clients, but women want and need cessation support from professionals they know and trust,��� said Sally Petty, coordinator of the Daviess County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition. ���We hope that hearing these champions��� success stories will inspire others who serve pregnant women and families to consider implementing some of the same simple, effective practices.��� Registration for the event is free but required prior to Feb. 15. Students from Lori Richardson���s Biomedical Sciences program and Michael MacMunn���s Engineering program are collaborating to design a hospital from the ground up. Richardson���s seniors in Biomedical Innovations are doing a basic mock up of the entire hospital and focusing on three departments that interest the students specifically. Caleb Elber, Andrew Morris and Joe Carroll are focusing on the Emergency Department. Taylor Stuessel and Alex Keepes are working on the Cardiopulmonary and Respiratory Departments. Concentrating on developing the Pediatric and Women���s Health Departments is Megan Rich. In collaboration with Richardson���s students are MacMunn���s Architecture students, Amanda Rostron, Daniel Krieg, Dalton Dillon, Erik Stuteville, Dakota Pancake and Dylan Query. They then broke up and visited three of the hospital departments in more detail. Vicki Stuffle, Director of Emergency Department, Martie Bickwermert, Director of Cardiopulmonary Services and Suzanne Burgess, Director of Post-Surgical and Pediatrics took the students on a thorough tour of their respective departments. Your Opinion Matters Complete the Community Health Needs Survey A community-wide health needs survey is now underway in our area. The survey focuses on strengths, household challenges and issues, and perception of needs in Daviess and surrounding counties. Your input is valuable. In an effort to plan for future health needs, the survey is being offered on-line and in printed form, in order to assure a variety of perspectives will be obtained. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is now available at www.dchosp.org Robot winner Petersburg Elementary had a drawing for a remote control robot. Any student that turned in their completed Computers for Education booklet on the first day was entered in the drawing. Joey Ridao in Mrs. Estey���s class was the lucky winner! Please be assured you cannot be identi���ed by responding to this survey. Any personal information will be included only in aggregate numbers in order to establish group trends. In about 3 months, Daviess Community Hospital will publish the results of the survey along with anticipated responses to identi���ed needs. It will be available for free to any interested individual.
