The Press-Dispatch A-7 Wednesday, February 13, 2013 Area Happenings Fire destroys car Tuesday morning Fire destroyed a car in Campbelltown early Tuesday morning. The car, a Cadillac, at Don Ennis residence was a total loss. Above Carl Benner sprays water on the car. Petersburg Fire Chief Phil Taylor said they were able to keep the fire from spreading to a building nearby. The building was a ceramic covered block building, which Taylor said helped. Firemen got the call at about 1:24 a.m. and the car was completely engulfed at the time. Chief Taylor said he didnt know who owned the car, which was a complete loss. Patoka Township also responded with a tanker to help with water supply, but the fire was contained quickly enough that they werent needed. How the recession has changed retirement their gains. Others moved their money to short-term savings, like CDs. But with interest rates so low, theyre actually losing money when you factor in inflation. Those are the two most common mistakes people make in retirement planninghaving everything in either stocks or shortterm savings is a bad idea, he says. Space your investments so theyll come due as theyre needed, Rousseaux says. Plan some that can be available in the short term, for emergencies, and others that will be available as you age. Only 14 percent of Americans are very confident theyll have the money to live comfortably in retirement, according to a 2012 survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Here are Rousseauxs suggestions for ensuring youre Monicas Meals in Minutes Seriously Simple Beef Stew By Monica Sinclair I have several free subscriptions for recipes from various sites. These include Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Kraft and Taste of Home. This weekend, I tried a new recipe from Kraft that was emailed to me last month. It is a new twist on an old favorite and it was quite tasty. There were even leftovers for the next day. This rec- ipe can be cooked on the stove or in a crockpot. Enjoy! I f yo u have a ny quest ions or comments, send them to: Monicas Meals in Minutes, PO Box 68, Petersburg, IN 47567 or email them to mealsinminutes@ pressdispatch.net. One of those is fixed, indexed annuities. You loan an insurance company money and it guarantees you payments over a specified length of time. Its a contract between you and the company, he explains. Fixed-rate indexed annuities have a minimum and maximum interest payment thats linked to a common index, such as the Dow. When the Dow goes up or down, so does the interest rate, but it never go below the guaranteed minimum or above the guaranteed maximum. Your principal is safe and you can ride an up market without the risk, he says. With pension plans a luxury of the past and Social Security not a guarantee for the future, Rousseaux says whatever your age, its important to start planning now for retirement by creating your own private pension. The good news is, our life expectancy grows every year, he notes. Its up to you to ensure that you have a great quality of life when you decide you no longer want to work. Conservation cropping systems workshops Workshops sponsored by the Conservation Cropping Systems for Soil Health and Productivity Project will be conducted at Vincennes University, Jasper Campus, March 13, March 15 at Southeast Purdue Agricultural Center in Butlerville and March 22 at the Diagnostic Training Center, Purdue Agronomy Research Center in West Lafayette. These workshops will discuss ways to make conservation cropping systems more successful on your farm. Topics include no-till and cover crops, including machinery adjustments, nutrient and pest management specific to conservation cropping systems and selecting and managing cover crops. How these systems help improve overall soil health will also be discussed. For more information, contact your local SWCD at 354-6120 ext. 3 or email info@iaswcd.org. Breathe Totally In In Comfort. Many models are ENERGY Specials ay ntines D Vale You & Me The economy may be recovering, but some of the changes wrought by the Great Recession may be long-lasting. Anyone planning for retirement, no matter what their age, needs to take those changes into account, says financial advisor Philip Rousseaux, a member of the esteemed Million Dollar Round Table associations exclusive Top of the Table forum for the worlds most successful financial services professionals. People in their 40s and younger have some time to retool their plan, but Baby Boomers need to think with more urgency, says Rousseaux, founder and president of Everest Wealth Management, Inc. A lot of boomers had all of their retirement investments in the stock market and, if they didnt lose their principal, it will take some time for them to recoup part of that 14 percent. Dont take risks you cant afford. This is another common mistake. Dont put the bulk of your assets into anything that makes your principal vulnerable. Gambling that youre going to win big on the market, or any other investment, means you also risk losing big. A portion of your investment should have a guaranteed return. Seek any guidance from independent financial advisors. This has two benefits: Advisors who arent marketing their own products have no conflicts of interest. You wouldnt go to a commissioned salesman for advice on buying a high-tech product. Instead, youd probably turn to a trusted friend or an independent expert source, like Consumer Reports. Take the same care with something as important as your retirement. The second benefit is that independent advisors can devise creative, innovative solutions to meet the needs of individual clients. Consider alternatives to the stock market. One of the effects of the recession is that the public realizes Wall Street is not a safe retirement plan.
