Five classes of competi- tion included more than two dozen events with three or more divisions in each competition. Halter, showmanship, West- ern performance, English perfor- mance and contesting classes in- volved 39 4-H participants compet- ing for first place trophies and rib- bons. Each class was broken down into horse or pony size and age of the participant. The day-long event brought 4-H members of all ages into the arena where members, family and horse enthusiasts saw everything from miniature horses led through an obstacle course to gaited horse- manship and pole bending. The final five events of the day were contesting classes such as barrel racing, flag racing, pole bending, speed and action, and keyhole. Most of the Pike's Flying Manes members had already taken the 2018 trail ride out of the Pike State Forest and had been looking for- ward to the day-long activities, according to 15 -year-old Gracie Jones, of Algiers. The keyhole competition in- volved racing to an eight-foot circle marked with flour that had an open- ing like a keyhole. The horse and rider must turn 180 degrees and get back to the finish line without touching the chalk line. Time is of the essence but scuffing the white line results in an NT (no time). Sidnee Mason won the over 56" intermediate in 11.43 on Izzy. Both Abby Goeppner on Solo and Gracie Jones on Red were NT in the se- nior over 56". Lynsie Messmer was first on Miss Golden Honohoar in 9.66. Olivia Schutler was second in 11.85 on Blair, Kaesha Keeker was third in 12.16 on Dixie and Makay- la Stanley was fourth in 14.63 on Di- xie. Presley Newkam was an NT on Cause of Fame. Zac Troxal won the 56" and un- der on Star in 7.77. Claire Robin- son won the over 56" junior class on Frosty in 11.20 and Lilly Mil- born was second in 14.50 on Bo. Paige Troxal on Shada Whiskey was second in the over 56" inter- mediate in 14.17 and Kylie Jenkins was third on Jamie in 16.05. Han- nah Heacock was fourth on Flurry in 20.91, Ruth Whitledge in fifth on Waylon in 25.07 and H. Minton was NT on Maggie. 4-H horse show draws contestants from five counties Abby Goeppner, a Pike's Flying Manes club member from Otwell, heads her horse to the fin- ish line during the keyhole class races at the Pike County 4-H Fairgrounds at Hornady Park. James Capozella photo Petersburg to host public visioning workshop July 10 It has been almost a decade since the development of the City of Petersburg's comprehensive plan and approximately five years since the Stellar Strategic Invest- ment Plans were presented. City officials are currently working on a 20 -year comprehensive plan that will identify a vision for the future, in addition to goals, policies, and action steps to guide growth and development. The city will be hosting a pub- lic visioning workshop at in Kief- er Hall at Main Street Presbyte- rian Church – located at 910 East Main Street in Petersburg – from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a brief presentation at 5:15 p.m., on Tues- day, July 10. The meeting will be an open house format, where individuals can stop by for as little as 15 min- utes to provide feedback through various visioning exercises. The development of the plan re- lies heavily on feedback and input from citizens. All ages, residents, business owners, and other inter- ested parties are invited to attend this workshop. "Petersburg needs your help to identify and prioritize goals for the future of this community," said Mayor R.C. Klipsch. "This will be the roadmap for our leaders and organizations to follow in the com- ing years." The public visioning workshop in July is just the beginning of this planning effort and will continue throughout the rest of 2018, with final adoption of the plan expect- ed in 2019. The adopted plan will contain goals, objectives and an ac- tion plan for the location and qual- ity of future development, infra- structure improvements, need for additional community facilities, economic development and more. For more information about the update of Petersburg's compre- hensive plan, contact Shari Hayes at 812-354-3396 or by email at shays@petersburg.in.gov.
