The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, May 30, 2018 B- 5 FALL Continued from page 1 In the fourth inning, Hannah Carnahan led off with a single and, one out later, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mont- gomery. However, the next batter, Stone, grounded out for the third out. The Lady Chargers would score their only run in the fifth inning on three straight one-out singles by Barnes, Croak and Vaughn. However, with sopho- more Shelbi Pipes – run- ning for Croak – at sec- ond and Vaughn at first, Halbrader hit a line drive to Gress, who then threw the ball to Grace Werner to pick off Pipes to complete an inning-ending double play. In the sixth inning, freshman Addy Johnson – pinch-hitting for Montgom- ery – singled with two outs and advanced to second when Stone drew a walk. But Mia Werner got Sorgi- us to pop-up to Hilgefort to end the inning. In the seventh inning, the Lady Chargers were retired in order. "We had our chances," said Weisman, whose team ended the season 14-9. "Two or three innings, we just needed the timely hit ... just something to happen." "You've just got to go and take advantage of every op- portunity," Weisman add- ed. "I don't think (Mia Wer- ner) was that tough. I just don't know if we were just swinging at bad pitches? I don't know." The 3-1 loss to Jasper marked the third straight year that Pike Central has lost to the Lady Wildcats – by the same score – to end its season. The loss also marked the end of the high school playing careers for the La- dy Chargers' six seniors: Jalah Barnes, Demi Croak, Lexi Halbrader, Jordan Montgomery, Peyton Sor- gius and Audra Stone. "When you talk about, like, re-grouping, it's going to be a major re-grouping," Weisman said. "There's going to be plenty of holes, plenty of opportunities for other girls to fill. Let's just see if they're ready to step up to the challenge. I hope so." Jasper, which improved to 18 -10, hosted Heritage Hills in a regional contest on Tuesday, May 29, with the winner advancing to semi-state, which will be played on Saturday, June 2, at Jasper. Pike Central 5, Princeton 0 Sophomore pitcher Alizé Padgett scattered eight hits – all singles – and struck out one while shutting out Princeton in a 5 -0 victory during the sectional tour- nament's semi-final round on Wednesday, May 23. Padgett retired the lead- off batter in each of the first six innings and allowed on- ly two Lady Tigers to ad- vance as far as third base. "We talked to her and told her that the first bat- ter of every inning was very important, you know, to try to keep something from getting started," Weisman said. "I think she did a re- al good job. She grew up quite a bit on the mound. She was making them hit the ball. She kept her com- posure and did a real good job for us." Pike Central struck ear- ly, scoring three runs in the first inning. Senior shortstop Audra Stone led off with a bunt single and, after stealing second base, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior right fielder Peyton Sorgius. Senior third baseman Jalah Barnes followed with a single to plate Stone with the game's first run, then scored on a double by se- nior first baseman Demi Croak to give the Lady Chargers a 2-0 lead. One out later, junior sec- ond baseman Emily Carna- han drove in Croak with a single to extend Pike Cen- tral's lead to 3-0. The Lady Chargers add- ed a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning, when Emily Carnahan, batting seventh, and junior right- fielder Hannah Carnah- an, batting eighth, led off with back-to-back singles and – after a sacrifice bunt by senior leftfielder Jordan Montgomery – scored on a double by Stone. "We really click when- ever we get the bottom of the lineup on," Pike Cen- tral head coach Rick Weis- man said. "It seems like when we do that, we get the right people on, and then the right people are coming up." Stone went 3-for-4 with a double, scored one run and drove in two to lead Pike Central, which improved to 14-8. Senior third baseman Tori Matthews and sopho- more catcher Jessi Goforth led the Lady Tigers (11-14) with two hits each. The 5 -0 victory by the Lady Chargers avenged a 6 -4 regular-season loss to Princeton on April 17. Pike Central 2, Vincennes Lincoln 0 Senior pitcher Peyton Sorgius scattered five hits and struck out four as Pike Central shut out visiting Vincennes Lincoln 2-0 in the opening round of the sectional tournament on Tuesday, May 22. The Lady Chargers, play- ing the game as the visi- tors, scored one run in the first inning when Sorgius, who had walked and ad- vanced to second on a sac- rifice bunt by senior third baseman Jalah Barnes, raced home on an error by Vincennes Lincoln senior shortstop Ally DeHosse. Pike Central extend- ed its lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning, when Sorgi- us reached on an error, ad- vanced to second on a bunt single by Barnes and to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman Demi Croak, and – after soph- omore centerfielder Lau- ren Vaughn was intention- ally walked to load the bas- es – scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Lexi Halbrader. The Lady Alices – who fell to 13-12 – had their best scoring opportunity in the second inning, when, with one out, DeHosse belted a double, and sophomore rightfielder Darrian Car- mean reached on an er- ror, putting runners on first (Carmean) and sec- ond (freshman pinch-run- ner Kyndall Myers). A fter freshman desig- nated batter Kali Haynes grounded into a force-out at third base, a passed ball al- lowed Carmean to advance to third base while Haynes moved up to second base. However, Sorgius struck out senior centerfielder Kaylee Lange for the final out of the inning. Vincennes Lincoln would not get a runner to advance as far as second base for the rest of the game. "Peyton pitched one heck of a game," Pike Cen- tral head coach Rick Weis- man said. "There were a couple of, like, 3-0 counts and 3-1 counts, and she bat- tled back. And the defense played well."
