So by clearing that first height and landing on the mat, all three of us were happy." Gavin Boyd subsequent- ly cleared 12 feet, 10 inch- es, and 13 feet, 2 inches, on his first attempts, and 13 feet, 6 inches on his second attempt – besting his previous personal-best leap of 13 feet, 4 inches – before missing on all three of his attempts at 13 feet, 10 inches. Kirby, who passed at 12 feet, 10 inches, cleared 13 feet, 2 inches, and 13 feet, 6 inches on his third at- tempts. Kirby then cleared 13 feet, 10 inches on his sec- ond attempt, which left him, Heritage Hills senior Jacob Luebbehusen and Bordon sophomore Eric Wheatley as the only com- petitors remaining. "Tyler didn't even real- ize he had made it to state after clearing 13 feet, 10 inches," Knight said. "He was just standing by the runway, and when I ap- proached him to give him a hug and congratulate him, he looked at me and said, 'for what? '" "I told him, 'look around, there are just three of you left. You're going to state, man! ' He was pumped and excited." According to Knight, Kirby used a 165 -pound pole until he cleared 13 feet, 2 inches, then switched to the 170 -pound pole he had used to win the sectional meet and cleared 13 feet, 6 inches, and 13 feet, 10 inches with it. "A fter that, the bar was set to 14 feet, 2 inches," Knight said. "We then put him on a 165 -pound pole that was six inches lon- ger than the 165 he used before. He cleared 14 feet, 2 inches, setting another school record." Kirby, however, was un- able to clear 14 feet, 4 inch- es, a height that both Lu- ebbehusen and Wheatley cleared on their second at- tempts. "A fter clearing 14 feet, 2 inches, his legs were go- ing, and he just couldn't get over that 14'4" mark," Knight said. "I know he can. He has had jumps in practice and jumps throughout the meet that he was high enough. So I look for him to jump bigger heights next meet." Gavin Boyd, meanwhile, came up a little short in his bid for a spot at the state finals, which will be held on Saturday, June 2, at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the Indi- ana University campus in Bloomington. The top three winners from each of the state's eight regionals automati- cally advance as well as any competitor who cleared the state standard height of 14 feet, 4 inches. If there are fewer than 27 entrants, the next best regional finishers are added. A total of 29 pole vaulters will compete at the state fi- nals – nine of whom placed first, second or third in their regional meets with leaps of 13 feet, 4 inches, or lower. "I believe he was two or three spots away from ad- vancing," Kramer said. "We hate that he was so close and didn't make it, but we are definitely proud of all the things that he has done in his four years." "He has definitely been a good leader for us and will be greatly missed, along with Quin Bailey as our manager," Kramer added. "She has done a great job helping out over the past four years and probably did way more than most peo- ple would have been able to do." "I am going to miss Gavin jumping with us," said Knight, who shares the Pike Central Middle School eighth grade pole vault record – 10 feet, 3 inches – with Gavin Boyd. "He has been a blast to coach and work with, and also was a good motivator to the younger kids. He has helped and pushed his brother, Garrett, and that has helped Garrett raise his heights as well. We are going to miss him on the track team." In addition, freshman Colt Armstrong finished 13th in preliminaries for the 200 -meter dash with a season-best time of 23.80 seconds. "It was a great experi- ence for him to run at the regional meet," Kramer said. "Hopefully, he can continue to go back in the future." Sophomore Nate Wool- ery, meanwhile, finished 14th in the 3,200 -meter run with a time of 10 :42.45. "Nate ran well and got some good experience that will hopefully help him in the future," Kramer said. Armstrong also teamed up with junior Colten Car- penter, sophomore Sam Theising and freshman Garrett Boyd to finish 14th in the 400 -meter relay with a time of 47.39 seconds. "For Garrett and Colton to step in as alternates (for Gavin Boyd and Tyler Kir- by) and for them to get the time that they did with on- ly a week of practice, I feel they did a great job," Kram- er said. As a team, Pike Cen- tral finished 19th out of 36 teams with 11 points. Evansville Memorial placed first with 75 points, followed by Evansville Cen- tral (46 points) and Prince- ton (44). "We had a really good showing by our guys in their respective events," Kramer said. "It's always a great night of performanc- es at the regional meet in all of the events – but pole vault was especially fun to watch." The Pike County Sluggers were runners-up in the Boonville Spring Swing this past weekend.
