D. Peeler It was introduced in 1917. Cheerwine began in the basement of L. D. Peeler in Salisbury, N.C. To this day it is the oldest continuing soft drink company still run by the same family. When the Maysville Syrup Company went bankrupt in 1917, L. D. Peeler and other invested businessmen moved the company to North Carolina and renamed it the Carolina Beverage Corporation. fi rst became a registered trademark in 1926. The product was named for its color and taste. Despite it's name, Cheerwine is not really a wine and contains no alcohol. It also is sweetened with sugar not high-fructose corn syrup. L. D. Peeler owned a wholesale grocery store in Salisbury next to a railroad station. Peeler was awarded a franchise of Mint Cola which he produced in the basement. However, when he developed Cheerwine it became very popular and they dropped Mint Cola in favor of Cheerwine. It is now a nationwide drink born in the basement in the Southern town of Salisbury. That same year, Peeler purchased a recipe for a cherry fl avored soda from a Saint Louis fl avor salesman, which eventually became Cheerwine.
