Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School boys' basketball team lost to South Knox 48 -40 on Saturday, Dec. 30, to finish sixth in the 12th annual Gra- ber Post Buildings Holiday Classic at North Daviess. The Chargers, who slipped to 3-5, had opened tournament play on Wednes- day, Dec. 27, with a 81-51 loss to Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian – ranked No. 5 in Class 1A – before rallying for a 56 -38 victory over host North Daviess in the semifi- nals of the consolation brack- et on Friday, Dec. 29. Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian defeated previ- ously unbeaten Barr-Reeve – ranked No. 1 in Class 1A – 68 -48 in the championship game on Saturday, Dec. 30. It was the fourth straight appearance in the GPB Clas- sic by Pike Central, which placed seventh in 2014, sec- ond in 2015 and third in 2016. "Overall, I thought we did some really good things," said Chargers head coach Hunter Elliott. "We're play- ing a little different style of game than they're used to, maybe, in the past couple of years, but it's a process, and I think we're getting better for it." "Playing Fort Wayne (Blackhawk) – that's a very, very talented team – and playing (Evansville) Bosse and teams like that, that's just going to prepare us for down the road," Elliott con- tinued. "If we're going to play a bunch of smaller schools and win by a lot, that's not necessarily preparing us to make a tournament run or anything like that. Seeing these teams now, I think, is very good for us." Pike Central High School senior Bryant Nalley, who av- eraged 18.7 points per game during the tournament, was named to the GPB Holiday Classic's All-Tournament Team for the third straight season. Nalley is currently 12 points shy of joining the school's exclusive 1,000 point club heading into a road game at Wood Memo- rial on Friday, Jan. 5. "As far as reaching 1,000 points, he deserves all the accomplishments and acco- lades that he can receive," Elliott said. "He couldn't be a nicer kid. We're all excited for him to get there, but he'd be the first to say he'd rather win every game than score CHARGERS PLACE SIXTH IN GRABER POST BUILDINGS CLASSIC Pike Central High School senior Bryant Nalley (40) tries to drive past South Knox senior Brandon Fick- ling (33) during varsity boys' basketball action in the Graber Post Buildings Holiday Classic at North Da- viess on Saturday, Dec. 30.
