The festival was a big hit as crowds flocked to the event Friday night and all day Saturday. Photo by Mick Hetman • Sam Hornbrook, a 1952 graduate of Petersburg High School, began working as a missionary in Mexico in 1958. He returned to Peters- burg to visit with his sisters, Carolyn Robling and Janice Hallin. • The Petersburg 12U girls' softball team won the Rural Girls' Softball League of Southern Indiana, going 12-0 and outscoring their op- ponents 184 to 11 over those games. Team members were Madelyn Fiscus, Karley Ka- vanaugh, Lexie Onyett, Ma- cy Stilwell, Jaidyn Gogel, Haylie Fulcher, Alyna Sharp, Chloe Williams, Avery Hunt, Delaney Welch, Chloe Willis and Tessa Vinnedge. • Otwell Miller Acade- my hosted an open house and announced text book rental would be free at the school. The school, which is grades K through 5, also had pre-registration as they pre- pared for the school's open- ing in August. • Mickey E. Rowe, 49, aka Handsome Mick, was arrested on Thursday, July 27 on charges of child mo- lesting and criminal deviate conduct resulting in serious bodily injury. Both charges are class A felonies with a sentence range of 20 to 50 years. • A house fire on Mon- day, July 31 claimed the life of Dorothy Kinman, 77, of 1703 W. CR 200 N., Peters- burg. The fire apparent- ly started on a stove down- stairs. Her husband, Mike, had helped Dorothy out of the house and then returned into the house to get their adult invalid daughter. He was able to get her out of the house. However, apparently while Mike was retrieving Gina, Dorothy went back in- to the house. Pike County Chief Deputy Kent Johnson and Petersburg Police Cpl. Scott Wright attempted to enter the home. Johnson said they tried to crawl into the house, but the fire and smoke were so intense, they were only able to go about 10 to 15 feet into house. AUGUST • Otwell resident and 2017 Pike Central gradu- ate Sydney Dame traveled to Honduras and spent four weeks in the summer work- ing at Faith Home. It is a General Baptist Internation- al Missions-sponsored mis- sion for children in Hondu- ras. Dame said, from an ear- ly age, going to Faith Home was on her bucket list. • A Winslow teen suf- fered serious arm injuries when the pickup truck he was riding sideswiped a utility pole. Kenton Key, 19, was a passenger in a pickup truck with Eddie Tisdale, Jr., when Tisdale was driv- ing east on CR 125 N. (Sugar Ridge Road) and ran off the right side of the road, side- swiping a utility pole. Depu- ty Mike Willis said Key had his arm resting in the win- dow sill of the truck when the crash occurred. • Petersburg Boy Scout Cameron Smith, who holds the rank of Life Scout, at- tended the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Bechtel Family Reserve Summit in West Virginia. "Awesome" was how Smith described his week, which included white water rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, virtual reality, and a visit and speech from President Donald Trump. • Petersburg City Servic- es Manager Brian Davis re- signed his position to take a job with Indianapolis Power and Light. • Pike Central boys' bas- ketball coach Jason Roach informed Pike Central offi- cials he had taken the head coaching position at Evans- ville North High School. Roach led Pike Central to two consecutive sectional championships. Roach, an Evansville native, had a 49 - 27 record in his three years at Pike Central and com- piled a 20 -6 record in 2016 - 17 season. • Pike Central graduate Derek Lunsford won the 212-pound class at the 2017 International Federation of Bodybuilding Tampa Pro, qualifying him for the 2017 Olympia in Las Vegas. • Joah Horrall, of Otwell, was a member of the Wash- ington-based Chuck Har- mon 14U Junior League Baseball team that won the Indiana State Championship in Fort Wayne. • Fire destroyed the for- mer Reel Chapel church building, located near Mar- tin's Curve, about two miles north of the Pike-Knox County line. The building housed Three Nails Minis- try, a disaster relief mission. It did not have utilities con- nected. Monroe City Fire Chief Chad Hasen said the fire was "suspicious in na- ture." • Aron Albrecht, 27, of Marion, was arrested af- ter he fled from a Peters- burg house on a riding lawn mower. He was arrested on charges of attempted resi- dential entry and criminal mischief. Police said a wom- an heard a knock at the door and no one was there. Then she heard glass breaking and when she investigated, she found a broken window and saw a man run from the window, get on a riding lawn mower and drive away. • School began on Au- gust 9 for the Pike County School Corporation with an overall enrollment of 1,940 students. • Pike County Chamber of Commerce Executive Di- rector Leslie Tegmeyer re- signed to take another job. Tegmeyer was credited with dramatically increasing the Chamber's membership, participation and activities in her two years as executive director. • Otwell Miller Academy had its first day of school on August 14. The K-5 school began classes in the Fellow- ship Hall of the First Unit- ed Methodist Church, while their new building was be- ing completed. The school came about after residents of Otwell formed the Friends of Otwell organization when the Pike County School Cor- poration announced they would close Otwell Elemen- tary School. • Five Pike Central stu- dents participated in the Drum Corps Internation- al World Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in India- napolis. Hanna Bush, Alex Edrington, Sarah Fenwick, Mallory Hunt and Morgan Sallee were among 500 se- lected to participate in the event. • Two Bloomington men were arrested on drug charg- es and a missing 14-year-old girl was located when police stopped a vehicle in Peters- burg that backed through a stop sign at Cherry and 11th streets at 3:36 a.m. with its lights off. Charles Burris, Jr., 18, was arrested on a fel- ony charge of possession of meth. Jessup Smith, 35, was arrested on a marijuana charge. While police were running checks, they found a 14-year-old girl in the back- seat who was listed as miss- ing from Bloomington. • Aron Albrecht was ar- rested on a charge of escape after he drove under the sal- ly port garage door and fled on foot from the Pike Coun- ty Jail, while he was being moved from the outdoor rec- reation area. "It wasn't any- thing that was preplanned. It was just something he did spontaneously," said Pike County Sheriff Jere- my Britton. He managed to stay a few yards ahead of police for several blocks and ran south on Sycamore St., with Jailer Jason Wil- son in pursuit. Near Good- let St., he grabbed a child's bike and rode it until he was cornered by a fence. He dumped the bike, jumped the fence and headed to- ward Highway 61. By this time, numerous police were in the area and they went to his mother's house on 10th St. Police arrived moments after Albrecht had burst through his mother's front door. "Once we saw what direction he was going, we knew where he was headed." According to a probable cause affidavit, Terry Tharp, who lives at the residence, said Albrecht ran into their residence. He asked them to hide him and said, "They are going to have to kill me. I'm not going back." • John Mandabach, of Bowman Family Holdings, and vice-president of the Pike County Economic De- velopment Council, was in- vited to be part of Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb's delegation of business lead- ers for an eight-day tour of Japan. The delegation was scheduled to meet with nu- merous industrial and man- ufacturing leaders. "This is something we have nev- er had the opportunity be- fore to go on, an interna- tional marketing sales trip. It is a great opportunity to promote our assets and me- ga site," said Pike Coun- ty EDC Executive Director Ashley Willis. • Fire destroyed a wood- working shop at the A za- lea Path near Union. Bev- erly Knight, owner of the A zalea Path, said it wasn't noticed until flames were coming through the roof of the building. SEPTEMBER • Deanna Wilson, 38, of Petersburg, was injured when she drove her 2001 Mitsubishi off of CR 275 E., hit a ditch and flipped upside down at about 8 p.m. on Sat- urday, September 2. • Petersburg native Cody Cannon, a videographer for country music star Chase Rice, traveled to South Ko- rea and took a tour of the De- militarized Zone between North Korea and South Ko- rea. He took a picture of a North Korean soldier taking a picture of him. • Petersburg dedicated their new fire house on Illi- nois St. with an open house and ribbon cutting ceremo- ny attended by about 100 people. • Otwell Miller Acade- my finalized and formal- ly signed their charter agreement with Grace Col- lege. Grace College Char- ter School and MBA Direc- tor Tim Ziebarth called the school opening "an excit- ing time" and that the com- munity "can be very proud" of what has taken place in such a short period of time. He noted that developing a new charter is very stress- ful and that getting to the point of signing the agree- ment document is a big mo- ment. Ziebarth said, "We take it very seriously and hope to see many years of partner- ship." He added it was "no small feat" for the school board, supporters and com- munity to get to this point.
