The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, Januar y 3, 2018 B- 3 dished out two assists each. For the game, the Char- gers made 18 of 47 field goal attempts – a 38.3 percent av- erage – and hit 10 of 12 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over nine times. From beyond the three- point line, Pike Central made five of 19 tries. "They helped to negate Nalley a little bit and he kind of came out onto the floor and he kind of got some stuff going in the second half," El- liott said. "But any time you have somebody with that much size, it kind of takes stuff away at the rim a little bit, and post options, so we had to kind of be content on shooting some outside shots, and we just didn't knock them down." Pike Central 56, North Daviess 38 Leading 5 -4 midway through the first quarter, the Chargers scored 13 straight points – on a pair of baskets by Western and three-point- ers by Booker, Nalley and senior Cameron Henson – to take an 18 -4 lead into the second period. North Daviess (5 -5), trail- ing 23-9 with 5:29 left in the first half, outscored Pike Central 9 -3 – on three-point- ers by junior Trevor Wagler and senior A.J. Wade and a three-point play by junior Shom Berry – to pull to with- in 26 -18 before a basket by senior Kaleb Claridge and a three-pointer by Western ex- tended the Chargers' lead to 31-18 with 7:25 remaining in the third period. The Cougars would close back to within 10 points twice – at 31-21 and 33-23 – before Pike Central answered with a 10 -2 scoring run to stretch its lead to 43-25 with 1:22 left in the third quarter. Nalley scored six of his game-high 23 points during that stretch while Booker and Benson added two points each. A pair of free throws by Berry pulled North Daviess to within 43-27 at the end of the third period, but back-to- back three-pointer shots by Claridge and Nalley at the start of the fourth quarter extended the Chargers' lead to 49 -27 with 5:30 remaining. The Cougars would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the contest. "We let up a little bit late, but, for the most part, we were really sound and mak- ing them earn everything they got, and only gave them one opportunity," said Elliott, whose Chargers out-rebounded North Da- viess 26 -16. "We really con- trolled the glass and kind of kept them out of the paint, and they were shooting con- tested jumpers. Defensively, I think we really came out ready to go." Henson, who hit two of five three-point attempts, add- ed eight points in the win- ning effort while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds and dishing out a game-high four assists. "I know it was a relief for Cameron," Elliott said. "I know he's been a little frus- trated with his shooting right now. That's just one of those things where we tell him just to keep your head up, keep shooting it, it'll fall, percent- ages will equal out. We're still kind of waiting on that, but it was nice for him to hit two threes there in that first half. I thought he did a nice job rebounding for us." "Bryant's been really steady all year," Elliott add- ed of Nalley, who grabbed seven rebounds while going 7-for-12 from the field – in- cluding 2-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc – and hit- ting seven of nine tries from the charity stripe. "He was a force that they really couldn't handle inside, so any time we could get him the ball, I felt like he was going to score it." For the game, Pike Central made 20 of 42 field goal at- tempts – a 47.6 percent aver- age – and hit nine of 13 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over three times. Berry and Trevor Wagler paced North Daviess with nine points each while soph- omore Kirk Wagler added eight points and grabbed a team-high four rebounds. For the game, the Cougars made 14 of 35 field goal at- tempts – a 40.0 percent av- erage – and hit six of nine tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over seven times. South Knox 48, Pike Central 40 Trailing 19 -12 late in the second period, the Chargers outscored South Knox 9 -3 – on a pair of baskets by Hen- son, a basket by Claridge and a three-pointer by Booker – to close to within 22-21 with 5:12 left in the third quarter. However, the Spartans would turn three offensive rebounds into a total of nine points – a three-pointer by ju- nior Nick Johnson and back- to-back three-point plays by senior Brandon Fickling and sophomore Justin Fickling – during its next three posses- sions to open up a 31-21 lead with 2:35 remaining in the third period. During that span, Pike Central went 0 -for-4 from the field – all from beyond the three-point arc. "We kind of battled back and cut it back to one, and I thought we were playing re- ally well and getting what we wanted," Elliott said. "We ac- tually came down and got the stop, but we kind of battled over the rebound amongst ourselves and tipped it out and they hit a three. And then we came down and missed, and they came down and we got another stop, and they got the rebound and put it back in for an and-one." "It was one of those things where, defensively, we kind of did our job," Elliott said. "We just didn't finish it off with the rebound. And that really hurt us there. Even if we don't necessarily hit the shots, if we just come down with the rebound, it's a dif- ferent story; it's still a one- point game. That's one of those things where we have to make sure we're focusing on the little things and make sure we're blocking out and getting the rebound every time." Trailing 33-23 early in the fourth period, Pike Central scored five straight points – on a basket by Nalley and a three-pointer by Benson – to cut the deficit to 33-28 with 6:10 remaining. However, back-to-back baskets by Johnson sparked a 9 -2 scoring run that extend- ed South Knox's lead to 42-30 with 3:05 left in the contest. A fter junior Gage Bobe hit a pair of free throws to give the Spartans a 46 -35 lead with 53.9 seconds remain- ing, a pair of free throws by Booker and a three-pointer by Benson cut the deficit to 46 -40 with 18 seconds left. However, a pair of free throw by Bobe with 13 sec- onds remaining would end the scoring. Nalley led Pike Central with a game-high 17 points, including nine in the fourth period, while Booker tossed in nine points and dished out three assists. Benson added six points and Henson had four points. "They were really sagging their defense quite a bit," El- liott said. "That made it dif- ficult to get Bryant the ball at times, or Booker or Cam- eron, whoever was in there. I thought we were a little re- luctant to take the shots that were open. I felt like we were getting a whole lot of good looks, but we weren't nec- essarily shooting them. You can't pass up those shots, be- cause that's going to open up the floor so much more." For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 16 of 32 field goal attempts – a 50 percent av- erage – and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line while turning the ball over five times. From beyond the three- point line, however, the Char- gers made just four of 16 at- tempts. Johnson and Brandon Fickling scored 13 points and 12 points, respective- ly, to lead South Knox (6 -3), while junior Zachary Welage grabbed a game-high five re- bounds. For the game, the Spar- tans made 18 of 31 field goal attempts – a 58.1 percent av- erage – and hit nine of 11 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over seven times. Pike Central and South Knox are scheduled to square off again in the Char- gers' regular-season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at South Knox. "I really wished we could have come out and got South Knox there at the end, but we'll have another opportu- nity at the end of this year and, hopefully, we can have a different outcome." Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Jan. 5, when the Chargers will travel to Wood Memorial. The Tro- jans are currently 6 -3 and ranked No. 6 in Class 1A. "It's definitely a rivalry," Elliott said. "It's one where the towns and the schools are so close and a lot of the kids play together in the summer and know each oth- er very well. It's going to be a really good atmosphere. Go- ing there is going to make it tough. I think we're go- ing to have to make sure we come out and play hard and be ready to go, and hopefully we'll come out with a w(in)."
