Poplar Street, Petersburg church this coming Sunday. With New Year's Eve over I would like to say thanks to everyone who partied respon- sibly, because we have heard of no accidents caused by drunk driving. Most everybody has partied at one time or another and while I don't do it any more, I know that it does go on with others. I can remember having such a great time when I partied but couldn't re- call next morning what I had said or done; but I had a great time! Whew glad those days are over and done with. Couldn't let a New Year's go by without saying something about resolutions. If you keep them they are super but most of us fall to the curb soon after saying them. The very best thing we can hope for in any new year is to learn from the past and adjust yourself to its lessons of life. It is a good tool if only we would all use it. Being a short week I had better shut up for now and get this in but I certainly hope for everyone to have a safe and prosperous new year. Be blessed and be a blessing as always. Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas The eternal message of Christmas is, a Savior was born. Christmas is a time of hope, good will and a life-changing message we call the Gospel. This Christmas we find a world in chaos, and the threat of terrorism as we shop for our family. The true message is in danger of being lost in fear and hatred among billions in our world. We need to rediscover the true mean- ing of Christmas. Christmas is a beauti- ful story about Joseph and Mary expecting the Christ child. The young couple arrived in Bethlehem and found no place to stay. They were strangers in town and finally set- tled for an animal shelter. It was there the King of Kings and Lord of Lords entered our world. He came to be one of us in or- der to save us. In many respects, that time was different from 2017. The Romans occupied their land and times were tough. But God chose this time in human history for Christ to be born. No one could imagine a vast world with six and one half billion people As we are challenged by the problems of the 21st Centu- ry, we are remind- ed these could be the last days. The signs of the times and world events all point to His soon re- turn. One needs to read chapters from the Bible like Mat- thew 24 to remind us Christ will return. As we celebrate Christmas with an un- derstanding of its true meaning, it can be a time of joy, hope and inner peace. Christ- mas is about God's gift. The gift means re- demption and salvation. All who truly repent and believe in Jesus Christ will have eternal life. All mankind is touched by God's love gift and invited to believe in Him as Savior. This is the true Christmas story. Make this Christmas special by worshiping the Savior and making Him the center of all your hap- py times at Christmas. Have you ever noticed that the Apostle Paul never speaks of his love for Christ? Rather he keeps talking about Christ's won- derful love to him. Neither does he exhort us to love Christ, but keeps telling us how Christ loved — and loves, us. This is consis- tent with the message specially committed to him: "The Gospel of the Grace of God" (Acts 20 :24). The Law said: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God" (Matt. 22:37). This is the very es- sence of the law. And we should love God, but the law cannot produce love, so God comes to us in grace and say: "I love you". This is why Paul's epistles are so filled with "the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 8:29). The fact that God deals with us in grace does not mean that believers should not, or do not, love Him. The very opposite is true, for love begets love. It is when men come to know the love of Christ that their hearts re- spond to him in love. Peter, like Paul, had once been a strict observer of the Law, but had since come to know the love of Christ in growing mea- sure. The result: A deep love for Christ and the overflowing joy that accompanies such love. This is why we find in I Peter 1:8 those touching words that naturally overflow from the heart and lips of one who has come to know the love of Christ: "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see Him not, yet believing ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory". Yes, knowing and loving Christ does in- deed bring inexpressible joy, but we cannot love him by trying. We must accept His love for us in faith so that our hearts may natu- rally respond. Crazy cold is how my nephew from Odes- sa, Texas described the weather in Texas. Man it doesn't seem as though it has been this cold for ages. Talk about being spoiled, we have been. So far our family has been blessed enough to not have anything freeze up but there is still time. The weather people seem to think that all will be better in about a week. So I guess we'll survive. We cancelled our services at Velpen Gen- eral Baptist because we have to winterize our facility each time we have services due to not leaving on the heat. As I have said before we use fuel oil and it costs a bit for a tank of fuel. It takes about an hour and a half to bring the temperature back to a livable temperature this time of the year in the old building. Hopefully we will be able to have Continued on page 2 RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N. And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him" (Luke 2:39 -40). "The hard thing to un- derstand is that faith is the one area where growing up means we must grow to be more like a child, trusting simply in the goodness and complete knowledge of a Father who has our best interest at heart"—Colleen Townsend Evans. As we begin another year, let's make it our pri- ority to have a childlike faith, trusting completely in our Heavenly Father and not ourselves. We invite you to worship with us. As we begin a New Year, we must look forward not backwards. The decisions we will make in the New Year will decide what the year will be. As the Bible says, anyone who is in Christ old things are passed away behold all things become new. My hope and prayer for all people who read this is that you will make a decision to confess the past, repent from your sins and accept Jesus as this Savior and Lord. A New Beginning for a New Year. Out west an old sheepherd- er had a violin, but it was out of tune. He had no way of tuning it, so in desperation he wrote a radio station and asked them at a certain hour of the day to strike the tone "A." The officials of the sta- tion decided they would ac- commodate the old fellow, and on that particular day the tone of "A" was broadcast. His fiddle was thus tuned, and once more his cain echoed with joyful music. When we live apart from God our lives get out of tune, out of harmony with others and with God. But if we live in tune with the Master, we too, will find ourselves surround- ed by His beautiful music. As this new year begins, ask God to help you tune your life every day to His Word, so you can bring harmony and joy to those around you. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. I'm sure you will leave feeling blessed. May God bless each and ev- ery one.
