The neighboring SC State Park's campground is very popular during this time of year, since rates are afford- able and campers are only a short drive away from activi- ties at the military park. Revolutionary War enthu- siasts revel in what is now called "Rev War Weekend". Hundreds of members of the Sons of the American Revo- lution, Sons of the Revolution, and Overmoun- tain Men (among others) participate in full costume. Members of the Daughters of the American Revo- lution often dress in period clothing to compliment the men. And the public is also invit- ed to join in. But, costumes are not required. At 11 am, the DAR and oth- er genealogy societies lay wreaths around the US Mon- ument on the battlefi eld to honor those who fought here. Guests are encouraged to at- tend, so bring a camp chair and arrive early to enjoy the ceremony. If you have the time, bring your children to the wreath laying ceremony. It is the pri- mary annual event to honor those who fought in this bat- tle. It is a patriotic and hum- ble affair, celebrated by those who remember that freedom isn't free. The Battle was hard-fought and hundreds of men (and a woman) lost their lives from both sides. More folks were injured and carried those battle scars the rest of their lives. One year and a week lat- er, the British surrendered at Yorktown. The fi ghting was over, but the real work of building a nation had just begun. We must never forget that Patriots sacrifi ced everything to give their children liber- ty in America. We are those children. It is our duty, no, it is our legacy to remember them and share their story with future generations. And, we do that one anniversary at a time. The schedule for the Kings Mountain National Military Park's 237th anniversary events are: Wreath Laying - 11:00 a.m. Anniversary Program - 3:00 p.m. Guided Lantern Tours - 7:00 p.m. **Reservations Required GPS does not work well at the park, but the address is: Kings Mountain National Military Park 2625 Park Road Blacksburg, SC 29702 Phone: (864) 936-7921 By Loretta Cozart A Wreath-laying ceremony on Oct. 7 at Kings Mountain National Military Park honors those who fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain Oct. 7, 1780.
