An opening reception will be held on October 18, from 11 am – 1 pm. The exhibition is a long-time vision of curator Stacy Costner's desire to showcase artists living with mental illness. Costner says in 2006, as a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she stumbled upon a cam- pus exhibit featuring this type of work and was "captivated by each artist's expression of their unique and complex healing process. Some of the artists who contributed to this exhibit are dealing with a mental illness. Others are friends, family, and professionals supporting those indi- viduals." As Director of the Mental Health Association of Cleveland County, Costner says "everyone needs a way to express themselves as we deal with the challenges of everyday life." CCC art instructor, Sally Jacobs, says the College is honored the artists have gener- ously shared a window into their world for us all to participate and that many artists, includ- ing; VanGogh, Auguste Renoir, Henry Matisse, Frido Kahlo, and Keith Haring are among a list of historical artists who have dealt with either a physical, emotional, or mental challenge. "These works serve as inspiration that we can cope with illness in our lives and it is through this picture plane that we get a glimpse of the purity of heart and open- ness of the mind," she adds. Healing through Art is a collaborative effort with the Mental Health Association of Cleveland County, The Adventure House of Cleveland County, and Believe in Abilities located in Gastonia, NC.
