Every year, tens of thou- sands of adults in the United States suffer serious health problems, are hospi- talized, or even die from dis- eases that could have been prevented by vaccination. To celebrate the importance of immunizations through- out life – and to help remind adults that they need vac- cines, too – the Cleveland County Public Health Center is recognizing August as Na- tional Immunization Aware- ness Month. This is the per- fect opportunity to make sure adults are protected against diseases like fl u, whooping cough, tetanus, shingles and pneumococcal disease. The specifi c vaccines adults need are determined by factors such as age, life- style, risk conditions, loca- tions of travel, and previous vaccines. All adults should talk to their health care pro- fessionals to make sure they are up-to-date on vaccines recommended for them. There is a misconception among many adults that vac- cines are just for children. The truth is, you never out- grow the need for immuniza- tions.
