Shelby American Legion Post 82 Shelby American Legion Post 82 will host a "Walk for Veterans" through downtown Shelby on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 9:00am. Leading the walk will be American Legion National Commander Dale Barnett and North Carolina Department Commander David Shore. As quoted by Commander Barnett, "The purpose of this walk is to raise public awareness about the crucial issues facing America's veterans and their families. An estimated 22 veterans a day commit suicide. Traumatic brain injuries have become a signature wound of the Global War on Terrorism and up to 20 percent of the men and women who served in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder. Also veterans still have diffi culty receiving health care in a timely manner and many have be includes a "Walk for Veterans" Tee Shirt. Remaining proceeds will benefi t American Legion charities. Run For Hope 5K Hope Community Church, formerly Element Church and Second Baptist Church will be hosting their fi rst, "Run for Hope 5k" on September 10, 2016 - 9:00am. It is their desire this year to support Hartley Plyler's education at the ClemsonLIFE program at Clemson University. This program is designed for students with intellectual disabilities who desire a postsecondary experience on a college campus. Hartley was born with several medical conditions that would put obstacles before her and result in numerous surgeries over her lifetime. This program is almost $40,000 a year, and Hartley's family has exhausted their savings on medical bills over the years. Hartley's parents were told when she was just a baby that she would never walk, yet she has completed a 5k. All funds raised will go directly to support Hartley in furthering her education.
