Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Vincennes Lincoln scored three un- earned runs in the top of the seventh in- ning to snap a 2-2 tie, then held off host Pike Central for a 5 -4 victory in a high school baseball game on Friday, May 13. Charger freshman Braxton Rice start- ed and pitched six strong innings, allow- ing two runs – both earned – on just four hits while walking one and striking out one before being relieved by junior Chase Davis at the start of the seventh. Davis retired the first batter he faced – second baseman Tate Schuckman – on a pop-up to Chargers junior first baseman Kane Osgatharp before issuing back-to- back walks to left fielder Braeden Field and center fielder Graham Toole, putting runners on first and second bases. The next batter, shortstop Brayden Seger, laid down a sacrifice bunt that Da- vis fielded in front of home. However, his throw to first base sailed high and out of Osgatharp's reach, allowing Field to score the tie-breaking run while Toole and Seger advanced to third and second bases, respectively. Vincennes Lincoln catcher Grant Oex- mann then hit a grounder to Pike Cen- tral junior shortstop Colton White, who threw Oexmann out at first base while Toole scored – giving the Alices a 4-2 lead – and Seger moved over to third base. With Vincennes Lincoln third baseman Treven Madden at the plate, Seger scored on a wild pitch – extending the Alices' lead to 5 -2 – before Davis retired Mad- den for the final out. "He came in cold," Pike Central head baseball coach Josh McDonald said of Davis. "He wasn't used to the umpire's strike zone and he wasn't getting his curveball across for a strike, which is his best pitch." "You walk two and you start pressing," McDonald added. "He probably would have gotten out of the inning with only one run scoring if he'd of made a good throw to first.
