CHOOSE BOYD FOR PERSONAL SERVICE! IDEAS AND GOOD SOIL PREPARATION The foundation for successful flower beds By Fran Petit Press-Dispatch Staff fpetit@sgstartimes.com I get excited when it's time to start tilling and planting my garden beds. Last year, we moved many hosta plants from the main flower bed to our bird habi- tat. We replaced those with tropical plants and put in some Elephant Ears. I'm thrilled at the prospect of getting my stored bulbs and potted plants in the ground and watch them grow. The first obstacle this year was getting the tiller to start. The new front-tine tiller was not stored proper- ly last fall — and I'll share winter storage instruc- tions at the end of the sea- son so you don't make the same mistakes. Fortunate- ly, I replaced the spark plug, drained the old fuel, added new 2-cycle fuel and it fired right up! Now, after I get the weeds pulled, I can start cul- tivating. Preparing the soil in your flower beds is so important, and it's great exercise for the mind and body. I start by pulling all weeds and using my wheel barrel to haul those to the woods or burning area. If you have some wild mustard plants, pull them and till those in- to the soil. The mustard con- tains phosphates and are great for soil conditioning and supplying nutrients for foliage and flowers. Now it's time to use the tiller to turn the bed over. If your flower bed is in a new area, it's hard to get your tiller to break the soil. A spade or shovel and a little labor works well. A fter the ground is loosened, it's eas- ier to till. When working dirt, it should be damp but not wet. If the soil is too wet, it will clump and clog the till- er tines. If the soil is too dry, it will be hard to dig. When turning over a spade full of soil, it should break apart and look moist without stick- ing to your tools and contain no visible water. The ground should be tilled down to the depth of a shovel — about 12 inches deep. Once you've finished working the soil, spread a layer of compost two inches deep and till the soil again to mix the compost. If you've got your own compost, this step is easy. Adding compost will improve the soil by add- ing nutrition and improving soil structure. If you don't make your own compost, check with your local gar- den center for bagged and bulk products, including soil amendments, manures, co- coa shells and organic soils. They starting at $4.99 for 20 lbs. If you have horses or ac- cess to a horse pasture, horse manure is great for flower beds and roses. Cow and chicken manure are very high in nitrogen and can burn plants if used in their pure form. However, they make good additions to the soil if you work them in well. They also act as a nat- ural, slow-release fertilizer. Most of these manure prod- ucts are highly composted, so look for something organ- ic to add along with them to get the best of both worlds. Peanut hulls, bark mulch or compost from your compost pile are all excellent options. A fter working the compost in to the soil, you will want to rake to level the flower bed. Now you're ready to plant. Next week: Planning and Plant Selection. Located in Dale, Family Roots Nursery has a great selection of soils for your garden prep.
