The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, May 18, 2016 B- 3 3-2, we're down 5 -2." The Chargers, however, rallied in the home half of the seventh inning, with senior Alex Tredway – pinch-hitting for junior right fielder Jacob Marchino – starting things off by drawing a walk. Marchino, re-entering the game to run for Tredway, ad- vanced to second base on a wild pitch by Alices' pitcher Blake Bobe, then took third on a single by senior left field- er Sam Stone. One out later, White hit a grounder to Seger, who threw to second base for the force- out on Stone while Marchino held at third. Davis followed with a single to right field, plating Marchi- no to cut Vincennes Lincoln's lead to 5 -3 while White raced to third base. A fter Davis stole second base, an infield single by ju- nior centerfielder Colton O'Neal scored White – pull- ing the Chargers to within 5 - 4 – while Davis advanced to third base. However, Alices relief pitcher Riley Bottoms struck out Rice swinging to end the game. "That's a good team," Mc- Donald said of Vincennes Lin- coln, which improved to 14- 6. "I thought Braxton threw the ball really well. He threw strikes. We have a really good defense when Braxton's on the mound. If he throws strikes and keeps the ball down, we're going to be pret- ty competitive. " "Teams are going to score runs, but if we don't make er- rors and we don't walk any- body, with that defense, then we're going to be pretty much in every game," McDonald added. The Alices took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Seger led off with a single, stole sec- ond base, advanced to third on a grounder by Oexmann and scored on a sacrifice fly by Madden. Pike Central rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning. A fter Rice drew a lead- off walk, a sacrifice bunt by Osgatharp allowed fresh- man Troy Rickard – courte- sy running for Rice – to ad- vance to second base. Rick- ard then moved over to third base on an infield hit by fresh- man third baseman Brennon Benton. With Marchino at the plate, Benton stole second base. However, Oexmann's throw to Seger sailed into center field, allowing Rickard to score on the error to tie the game at 1-1. Benton, however, was thrown out trying to advance to third base on the play. In the top of the third in- ning, Field drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Rice. With one out and Seger at the plate, another wild pitch al- lowed Field to take third base. Seger then laid down a sac- rifice bunt, scoring Field to give the Alices a 2-1 lead. In the home half of the same inning, a one-out hit by freshman second baseman Race Britton, a four-pitch walk to White and a two-out infield single by O'Neal load- ed the bases for the Chargers. Rice then drew a four-pitch walk, forcing in a run to tie the score at 2-2. Rice would give up three hits and hit two batters with pitches over the next three in- nings, but only one Alice was able to advance as far as third base. "He was hitting the spots, which is good," McDonald said of Rice. "And he was throwing the ball. He was aiming early in the year and it would cause him to lose veloc- ity, and he had his velocity all the way until I took him out." "Braxton throws the ball hard for a freshman, but whenever you slow it down to throw the ball across the plate, a varsity baseball team – I don't care who they are – they're going to hit you," Mc- Donald said. "If not the first time around, they will the sec- ond. He didn't do that. And he competed, too." Pike Central, which dropped a 5 -4 loss at North Posey on Monday, May 9, de- feated visiting Wood Memo- rial 5 -0 on a two-hit shutout by White, who walked none while striking out 11. On Monday, May 16, the Char- gers routed visiting North Daviess 13-3 in five innings to improve to 9 -12-1. Pike Central will host South Spencer on Thursday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m., before closing out the regular season at home against South Knox on Saturday, May 22, at 1 p.m. The Chargers will open sectional tournament play at Jasper by taking on Wash- ington on Wednesday, May 25, at 8 p.m., with the win- ner to square off against the winner between Jasper and Southridge – who square off on Wednesday, May 25, at 6 p.m. – in the sectional semi- finals on Monday, May 30, at 1 p.m. The host Wildcats are ranked No. 1 in Class 3A in the most recent poll released by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Associa- tion. "I don't care who you are in the state of Indiana, you don't want to draw Jasper the first game," McDonald said. "But, that being said, you've got to beat them at some point and time, or beat somebody who beat them, to win the section- al."
