Arts and Entertainment Page 5 May 18, 2012 'My Morning Jacket', subtle yet perfect to ears Eddie Spidle A&E Editor With a band name like that I couldn't help but stop and listen. As usual I was adding another station to my Pandora to lay mixed in among the hundreds of other indie rock wanna-be's and the indie classics. This time I was adding one of my favorite artists Bon Iver. Little did I know that I would inadvertently fall in love with a different band. The first song I heard by "My Morning Jacket" was their less noted composition called Golden. Jim James, lead singer, bursts through the music with his subtle yet full vocal voice. From Louisville Kentucky the band found it difficult to grab hold of a diminishing music scene due to their unique sound. Fighting through the broken and tattered rungs of the bottom of the music ladder the band found their foothold with the album Tennessee Fire in 1999. While continuing to gain a following the band boosted their talent with the addition of Patrick Hallahan on drums, Bo Koster on keyboard, and Karl Broemel on guitar. With 'Iris', redefines the usage, need of Shelby Keeler Topics Editor Iris is her name, and answer- ing your every day questions is her game. Siri, fear her. Iris is the new way to vocalize your searches and to help express those random thoughts that run through your mind. Or, maybe, answer some- thing that you are passionately curious about. Iris is basically the clone of Siri. Hence, the clever name, or not so clever. Iris is a free app that can be downloaded in the Google Play Store. Siri, if you don't know is the iPhone version of a vocalized search engine. So, when you "speak" to your phone it would recognize what you were saying and try to answer anything, with a little bit of humor involved. Cha Cha powers the app it- self. Iris can call, read unread text messages, search, give the weather and practically do any- thing you ask it to. She can also go internally into your phone and have you ask her to wake you up, call contacts, or update your Twit- ter/Facebook. Some "new additions" to Iris is that she can: upload photos to Facebook and also open other applications like Pandora or In- stagram. Although sometimes she can be a bit sarcastic, her humor sometimes saves her when she doesn't know the answer or can't understand what you're saying. She doesn't necessarily like to help you with illegal activities, unlike Siri. To activate the app you tap on the blue "iris" and wait for a loud chirp, and then proceed to ask. You can have a full-fled conversation with her, although she sometimes loses her train of thought and will spout out ran- dom answers. Compared to other "ask" en- gines like Vlingo and Google Voice Search, Iris' recent rat- ings have proven that she is the ultimate ask engine. Iris has been chosen as an Editors Choice app, online. Considering the fact Iris is Golden which swept through the hearts of indie lovers, and Just One Thing which grabbed hold of every listener. Regardless of your taste in music this band is sure to please. For the country lovers out there, the steel guitar and Kentucky based sound is sure to please. For the rock lovers, the classic rock sound of One Big Holiday is the track for you. It Still Moves came with such hits as their single One Big Holiday, the music to which you may recognize from multiple T.V. commercials, grabbed me by the eardrums and taken me for one of the best musical experiences I've endured. I've become so addicted to their music that I fall asleep to the album on shuffle and wake up to Golden as my alarm. Most Android Smart Phones have the common four buttons on their screens, one being the search icon. Iris is integrated into this search icon. Iris all together is a helpful personal assistant. If you're using her as just a funny app to mess with then she'll be perfect for your needs. If you're using her for a serious matter you might want to con- sider using Google because her accuracy is not always 100%. Ashlan Brunello Features Editor "Hunger Games" by Su- zanne Collins was a huge hit among crowds of young adults and adults. In this series there are three books all following the lives of Katniss and Peeta; these two were the protagonists and main characters of the novels. "Catching Fire", the second book in the series, is almost just as fantastic as the first one. It's hard to believe, but Collins managed to keep up the sus- pense and the excitement in the second just as well as she did in the first. When I first started reading Astounding app makes for hours of entertainment. "Catching Fire", I was expect- ing it to be a slight disappoint- ment compared to the first novel in the series but I was surprised by how much suspense Collins managed to incorporate in. In "Catching Fire", Katniss and Peeta have just had enough time to return home from the games and adjust to the life of being winners. Almost as quickly as they re- turn, however, they learn that they will be sent into a new games meant just for the vic- tors. Katniss has one goal, "keep Peeta alive". This entire novel keeps readers anxious and "on their toes" at all times. Katniss is more sophisti- cated and has grown in many ways in this novel. She is not only more sophis- ticated, but she is also stronger. She is "perfection" on the bow and uses everything to her ad- vantage. Collins does a fantastic job at explaining the pain that the characters are feeling. One more thing that she does a great job doing is de- scribing the unbearable need for water. Although this book is in- tended for a young audience, Collins doesn't hold back in her writing and because of this, I believe her novels are made ten times better than they would be otherwise. Although readers know that only one person will be allowed to exit the arena alive, Collins "Catching Fire" a strong addition to the Hunger Games series. I was convinced throughout the entire novel that both Peeta and Katniss would make it out and make it together in the "out- side world". One of the main things that I enjoy about Collins' writing is that all of her characters are real. In many recently written teen novels, the main character has supernatural powers. Although these kind of reads are normally good, I love that Katniss and everybody else in these novels have no powers at all. The closest thing to a power that Katniss possesses is her ability to handle a bow. I would recommend these novels to anybody that enjoys an amazing read.
