Thursday, February 9-February 15, 2012 www.shelbyinfo.com 704/484-1047 - shelby shopper & info - Page 39 Business Annual Banquet Recognizes Contributions of Chamber & Community Volunteers Local business leaders and community volunteers enjoyed an evening of reflection and fun at the 2011 Annual Banquet of the Cleveland County Chamber on January 26,2012 at Cleveland Country Club in Shelby. This evening was possible thanks to our| sponsors: Fox Distributing Company, Duke Energy, Shelby Savings Bank, First National Bank, Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Gardner-Webb University, Foothills Spotlight Magazine, and Personnel Services Unlimited. Local band "Calm and Collective" entertained the crown with their musical talent. Calm and Collective is an original, reggae jazz band from Shelby. Formed in 2006, the band has traveled up and down the east coast. In recent years, the band has broadened their repertoire to include country and bluegrass music. The banquet brought a ceremonial end to a successful and productive year, and included the traditional "passing of the gavel" by 2011 Chairman Scoot Dixon (Gardner-Webb University) to 2012 Chairman Dr. Bruce Boyles (Cleveland County Schools). Each year at the banquet, several community members are recognized with special awards. This year, the Athena Award (presented to an outstanding businesswoman) was given to Shannon Kennedy of Cleveland Community College. The Jean Bettis Support Staff Award, that pays tribute to support staff who display corporate loyalty and attitude, was given to Jennifer Newton of Cleveland County Healthcare System. The Emerging 10 awards are given to recognize the area's fastest and strongest growing small businesses for their exceptional achievements in the area of business development. The highest ranking company of those 10 selected will be honored with The Carson L. Fox Entrepreneur of the Year Award presented by Fox Distributing. This year's Emerging 10 are: Smoke on the Square, Hallelujah Acres, Patrick Yarns, Pleasant City Wood Fired Grille, Darrell L. Keller, CPA, PA, Carter Chevrolet, Specialty Lighting, Foothills Spotlight Magazine, Allen Tate Company, and Western & Southern Life. The Carson L. Fox Entrepreneur of the Year Award was presented to Pleasant City Wood Fired Grille.. The Volunteer of the Year Award is a tribute to the memory of Paul P. Limerick and is given to the person who has made the most significant contributions of time and energy to Chamber programs and events. This year, the Volunteer of the Year Award, was presented to Ebbie Champion of Foothills Spotlight Magazine. The Bridge Builder Award was established to honor someone who is committed to bringing the community together. David Dear, former Cleveland County Manager received this year's Bridge Builder Award. A lifetime achievement award, the Zenith Award, was presented to County Commissioner Eddie Holbrook. The Duke Energy Citizenship Award is presented to an individual or group who demonstrates the following values: Integrity, Stewardship, Inclusion, Accountability, Teamwork, and Initiative. This year's recipient was Gardner-Webb University. The 2011 Industry of the Year Award was sponsored by Personnel Services Unlimited and given to STEAG. The Cleveland County Travel Industry of the Year Award presented to The Cleveland County Fair was sponsored by Foothills Spotlight Magazine. Two other awards are given during the banquet to recognize the contributions of the Chamber's Ambassadors, a group of volunteers who assist with member relations. The Rookie Ambassador of the Year Award was presented to Charlie Walls of Carolina Custom Lawn & Landscaping and the Ambassador of the Year Award was given to Jane Ballard of Sterling House.
