FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR Kosa The retirees have fished a few times since I last reported. First from Lake Norman, Mack Wyatt and Johnny Christainberry picked up a win with 6.40. They also had big bass of the day with a 2.0. James Haynes and Tommy Wess were a close second with 6.20 followed by David O'Shields and J R Henry with 5.95. The next week the old-timers hit Lake Wylie and once again Wyatt and Christainberry took top honors with 5.15. Ronnie Humphries fished solo and had 3.90 to claim second, he anchored that with big bass of the day, a 2.95 large mouth. Fred Wright and Doug Sparrow were third with 3.25. February 24th, the BassMaster Classic will kick-off on the Red River out of Shreveport- Bossier City, Louisiana. The anglers will be allowed to fish Pools 3, 4 and 5. Many predict pool 5 to be where it will be won. However, according to one local professional fisherman, that may not be the case. "I think it could be pool 4 or 5, it's all going to depend on the weather between now and then", says Matt Arey. "If it doesn't get cold, those bass could move up and it be a dream come true for flipping, if it turns cold, crankbaits will likely dominate like last years Classic," he added. Another local professional, Andy Montgomery says, "I think flipping stumps, and matts of vegetation in the back waters is where it will be won." Montgomery didn't pick any cer- tain pool or area, just stating any of them could be good. In last year's Classic, you may remember, most started out with spinnerbaits and quickly fell behind eventual winner Kevin Van Dam who used a square bill crankbait to pick the big'uns one after another, despite having several anglers within casting distance. Jason Wilson, another local pro and owner of the Great Outdoors in Cherryville adds his thoughts. "The fish are going to be shallow and moving up, it will be like last year, the square bill crankbaits and even spinnerbaits will be dominate". When I ask Jason about someone staying in Pool 3 (where the launch is) and utilizing that time to fish instead of travel, could it pay off? "It could, most of your guys are going to (pools) 4 or 5, so someone could get on a couple good spots and make it work for them. But that's a long shot, it's better fishing in the other two." Matt Arey added, "The man that uses his time the best will win, you can travel a lot down there or have several spots fairly close together and put the trolling motor down and cover the water and make it work for you." While I hit up the Cherryville young man, I had to hit up my buddy Guy Eaker for his thoughts as well. "The winner will be someone using a crankbait and possibly a spinnerbait to cover the water and then flips a jig in some of those nasty looking logs and stumps and gets a big kicker fish, I predict it will be won in Pool 4". All agreed it will be a very interesting tournament with good even great catches and the man that uses his time well while actually fishing and makes no mistakes will win. So eliminate the unproductive areas and you increase your odds dramatically. Fish shallow bays and coves fringed by marsh within two weeks after ice out. Don't overlook the channel leading to the lake as pike use it to move in and out of the bay. For up to a month after spawning, pike can be found resting and feeding near the channel, often around weed beds in the open lake. After the water warms, northern pike move off to deeper water but still use the channel as a highway between deep and shallow water. Mid-summer finds pike suspended over drop-offs or hanging around islands, points, and river mouths. Jerry Martin is a Co-Host of "Bass Pro Shops® 100% Real Hunting" TV Show on NBC Sports Network. By By Gary Miller The warm February weather has re- ally put a hamper on the work I need to get done. I'm hearing about 15 inch crappie and my mind keeps wondering to places far away from my offi ce. I love warm winters. The air seems so pure and fi lled with extra goodies like adrenaline and passion. Each breath is a heavenly tonic that seems to cure and rejuvenate everything that the previous diffi cult days have stripped away. I think it is only fi tting that a new year starts this way. It's as if the tank is refi lled with the fuel that will be needed for another year. I am constantly amazed at the intri- cate way our universe is designed. In fact, it is this design that provides one of the evidences for the existence of God. When one discovers how specifi cally complex creation actually is, he is forced to contemplate how such complexity could happen without an intelligent de- signer. Let me illustrate with the most recent example. When considering DNA, Bill Gates noted, "DNA is like a computer program, but far, far more advanced than any soft- ware we've ever created." Now if you need to, read that quote again. We're talking Bill Gates here; the foremost ex- pert on software programming. Now I might be one fry short of a Happy Meal, but I promise you if I were to discover a CD with Microsoft Offi ce on it, I wouldn't pick it up and say, "Look at what random CAMPERS/RVs CAMPERS/RVs WANT TO BUY: Pop-Up Camp- ers. Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ selection produced over the past mil- lion years!" No, I would know that behind such specifi c, complex, and precise in- formation, there must be some personal and intelligent designer. I'm not talking about faith here; I'm talking about a ra- tional and reasonable response to the evidence given. And to think that I, along with millions of other hunters and fi sh- ermen, get to gawk with amazement at these proofs as we pursue our favorite hobby. No wonder I always proclaim, "I've never met and atheist hunter." My hunting and fi shing friend, don't ever take for granted the blessed privi- lege that you have as you go outdoors. Don't assume that it will always be there for you. And don't think that this universe and all of its components are there just for your viewing pleasure. Remember as the Psalmist told us; "The heavens de- clare the glory of God; and the fi rmament shows His handiwork." There is a great cosmic Designer and this truth ought to be more evident to the outdoorsman and outdoorswoman, more than any other group. Be thankful for such a privilege, but don't keep this good news to your- self. I'd love to come and speak to your group about these truths.
