FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR Moss Lake The last Thursday night bass tournament of the year blasted off last week on Moss Lake. Thirteen boats came out to fish and saw Billy and Michael Melton take the win with 8.34. Arnold and Steve Gordon had 5.94 and landed in second, with Chet Beam taking third with 4.12, he also had big bass with a 3.7. Saturday the fish-off for all those who qualified from the weekly Thursday events came together on Moss Lake. Twenty-four boats made the call, when all was said and done, Brian and Cody Hoyle took the win with 9.4 and first big bass with a 4.3 largemouth. Second place was 8.2 and went to Randy and Randall Wright, they also had second big bass with a 3.11 largemouth. Matt Arey and Chet Beam took third with 7.0, followed by Reggie and Johnny Guffey with 6.14. Wayne Miller and Phillip Allen settled in fifth with 5.4. Arnold wanted to thank all that came out and fished this year, " We had a good year, a good fish-off, and a good payback", and said he planned to start up about the third Thursday in March. Kosa The Kosa retirees fished Lake Norman last week with John Black and Roger McNeilly bringing in 9.20 and taking the win. A tie for second between the teams of James Haynes/ Tommy Wess and Larry Melton/George Crosswhite, as both brought in 7.0. Ronnie Humphries took third with 6.10 and he had big bass of the day with a 3.45 largemouth. This week it is back to Lake Wylie and a change on the start/finish times. The old timers want that extra hour of sleep, so it is an 8 am blast-off and a 2 pm weigh-in. CCBC The Cleveland County Bass Club fished Lake Greenwood last weekend. Ray Hembree took the win and tightened the points race between himself and Roger Beaver. Hembree brought in 8.56, Beaver was second with 7.94. Third went to Tammy Melton with 7.46, and she answered that with big bass of the day, a 4.06 largemouth. Roger Hamrick had 5.84 and was fourth and rounding out the top five was Larry Melton with 4.20. The top five are really close with 3 events remaining. Beaver holds a 1 point lead over Hembree with Tammy Melton in third, Larry Melton in fourth and Roger Hamrick in fifth. Stumpy Pond will be the stop in October, a date has yet to be decided. Fact is, it really doesn't take a whole lot of kinetic energy to shoot a razor sharp, broadhead-tipped arrow completely through even the largest whitetail deer. With today's modern compound bows you can achieve a relatively high arrow speed without a lot of draw weight. Bows drawing as little as 55 pounds can produce plenty of speed and kinetic energy to take any whitetail buck while remaining very accurate, quiet and consistent. If I were you, I would concern myself more with ease and quietness of draw and release, consistent accuracy, balance and just how the bow feels to you than I would how fast my arrow travels. They're com- ing from everywhere from Maine to Mis- souri and from Texas to Tennessee. The hunt is on. Bears and birds, ducks and deer; it seems that most hunters are fi ll- ing tags and freezers. And the next two months will probably be even better as the ducks move south and the deer begin to rut. For years, the annual opening day for hunting has been more like a national holiday. It has been observed since hunt- ing was actually segregated into seasons. And while the archer is the fi rst to get in the woods to chase deer; it is the opening day of rifl e season that has become the most anticipated day. This day brings out not only the serious outdoorsman, but also the guy or gal who simply looks forward to a few days each year of getting away with a few other folks, sitting in a hunting house, and waiting on a buck to enter the crosshairs of the scope on their gun. Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ son during this spe- cial day. I'm always amazed at how hunting and fi shing seems to bridge all sorts of gen- erational, relational, gender, and even racial gaps. I know of nothing else that can be enjoyed with equal passion and requires limited ability than the hunt. It is a great platform for relationship building and for imparting subtle wisdom to those who may need to hear the truths of life in an unintimidating setting. Even as I write, I am thinking about how I will try to guide my own grandson's life by taking him hunting and fi shing. The time waiting on fi sh to bite or a deer to show up will not be wasted or unproductive. It will be the real reason for our trip and the real harvest will be long after the actually day itself. The hunt will simply be his marker to remem- ber. And while he may be able to tell oth- ers about his success in the fi eld, he will hopefully recall a life lesson that helped mold the man he wants to be. www.outdoortruths.or www.outdoortruths.org Hail Damage, Dents? ©CommunityFirstMedia Outdoor Truths Bruceu e Camp's Local
