Fitness Equipment Available Has the doctor suggested you need to start working out or possibly you’ve decided you need get up and get moving? Need a fitness program, but don’t want to pay the cost of a gym membership? Is it too hot to walk outdoors? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we invite you to make the Council on Aging/Leona Smith Neal Senior Center’s fitness room part of your on-going or new fitness routine. We have several treadmills, stationary bicycles, and other fitness equipment to help work each section of the body. The equipment is available during Senior Center operational hours 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The Senior Center also has an indoor walking track so you can stay cool while you walk during these hot summer days. There is a charge of $2 per day to use the equipment, unless you are a $50 annual member of the Senior Center (which is the best deal). In order for the Senior Center to repair existing equipment as well as look into the purchase of new equipment for the fitness room for the public (55+) we must charge this small fee. This small fee is still the best deal in town for use of fitness equipment. You can’t join a gym anywhere in the county for less. New participants must sign a liability waiver and be trained by authorized staff on the use of the equipment. For more information, please call 704-482-3488. Annual memberships may be purchased at the Neal Senior Center from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. If you missed the Spring class, have no fear, because the next class is just around the corner. The class will be offered at the Leona Smith Neal Senior Center, located at 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm (with an hour lunch break) on August 31, 2011. As we age, our reflexes become slower, our vision and hearing gradually diminish all of which affects our ability to drive safely. The AARP’s Safe Driving Program includes a comprehensive curriculum designed especially for the older motorist. Participants age 50 and above will refine existing skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. Also included is a review on how to handle adverse weath- er conditions and traffic haz- ards as well as learn about the effects of aging and medica- tions on driving. For more information or to register for the class, please call the Senior Center at 704- 482-3488. There is a fee of $12 for AARP members or $14 for non-AARP members to cover the cost for materials. This fee will be due to the instructor on the date of the class. Beginning this year, the AEP will now be from Oct. 15 thru Dec. 7. All changes made during this time will be effective Jan. 1, 2012. It is imperative to remember that Medicare beneficiaries will no longer have until the end of the year to make changes, so you need to plan now. Medicare prescription coverage may be obtained in a standalone Part D plan or as part of a Medicare Health Plan. Information on the Part D plans and Medicare Health Plans to be offered in North Carolina for 2012 should be available in early October at www.medicare.gov or from the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) at www.ncshiip.com A beneficiary should not assume that a plan that meets their needs in 2011 will provide the same coverage in 2012 or that it is the best plan for them in 2012. Part D plans contract on a yearly basis with the Medicare program. This allows for changes with formulary lists (the prescription medica- tions covered by the plan), restriction and limitation requirements, monthly premium payments, and pharmacy copayments for any medication each year. SHIIP encourages each Part D participant to compare the coverage offered by their current plan with the coverage that will be offered by all plans available in 2012. Medicare recipients who have not previously enrolled in a Part D plan are allowed to do so during this period, although they might see a late enrollment premium penalty if other creditable coverage did not exist. Further, Medicare beneficiaries with low incomes and limited resources may be eligible for an Extra Help/Low Income Subsidy (LIS) program that reduces or eliminates the monthly premium and annual deductible and reduces prescription co-payments. SHIIP can help determine eligibility and can assist with the application process at any time during the year. SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance and can assist anyone with questions about Medicare Part D coverage information and enrollment. Trained SHIIP counselors are available for one-on-one counseling appointments in all 100 North Carolina counties. To make appointments call The Council on Aging/Senior Center at 704-482-3488. For more information, contact The Council on Aging/Senior Center at 704-482-3488 or SHIIP at 1-800-443-9354 or visit www.ncshiip.com.
