Cooking Is A Way Of Life For Lowrey For Lowrey Young, cooking is a way of life. She recalls always being that friend and family member who cooked shelbyinfo.com for the group. That tradition continued when she moved to Shelby in 2008 to be closer to family. Lowrey admits, “I’ve always loved to cook but I never dreamed I’d be selling what I cook.” Her new small food-based business, Forever Young Breads & Spreads has changed that. In the beginning Lowrey devoted most of her time to the arduous task of making sourdough bread. In the past year she has shifted her focus to homemade pimento cheese and salsa. She laughs as she recalls several instances of being referred to fondly as the “pimento cheese lady”. Lowrey also offers seasonal salsa using fresh ingredients. She finds her cooking to be a creative expression of what is available. She emphasizes that she does not follow recipes which means that her salsa is different every week, depending on what is available. Lowrey’s resourceful approach has proven to be a valuable skill at The Shepherd’s Table soup kitchen where she volunteers her time. The Shepherd’s Table was founded in 2010 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and now serves breakfast and lunch to as many as 500 people every Wednesday. With a smile, Lowrey empha- sizes that she has never served soup at the Shepherd’s Table. Instead, she improvises her menu, just as she does her salsa recipe, to include available ingredients. Some of the ingredients Lowrey uses at The Shepherd’s Table come from the Foothill’s Farmer’s Market Farmer Foodshare program. Farmer Foodshare allows farmers and customers to donate local, fresh produce to organizations that feed the hungry in our local community. Jody Edwards has been diagnosed with leukemia. He tries to be positive and hasn’t had a haircut for almost four years. On Tuesday, August 2, Jody went to Trendsetters and had owner Joseph Lovelace cut his hair so he could do- nate it to “Locks of Love”. Jody’s son Adam also had his long locks cut and donated his hair. What an outstanding example of how people continue to help people. “Locks of Love” is a public non-profi t organization that provides hairpieces to fi nancially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21, suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Their mission is to return a sense of self confi dence and normal- cy by utilizing donated ponytails. Joseph says that Trendsetters constantly “seeks and sends hair to this great organization”.
