Tough conditions due to all the heat and lack of rain made it very rough on the fishermen. J R Garland picked up the win with 5.35, he was followed by George Crosswhite and Larry Melton with 3.45, they anchored that with a 2.45 largemouth, that was big bass of the day. Third went to Ray Hembree and James Osborne with 3.20. This week it is back on Lake Wylie. MOSS Fourteen boats fished last Thursday at the weekly bass tournament on Moss Lake. Brian and Cody Hoyle brought in 10.26 and got the win. Johnny Guffey and Allen Pickleshimer had 6.40 and took second. By Gary Miller By I’m not one of those professional ar- chers who shoot their bow year-round. I am a hunter who has to wipe the dust off of it during this time of year. I know this is the period where I have to be- gin shooting in order to feel comfort- able in various hunting situations when deer season comes about. But it’s so hot right now! And since my wife is not too keen about me setting up an indoor range down the hall in my house; I am going to have to endure the August heat for a chance at October meat. I wish that I could just grab my bow and pick up where I left off last year. I wish that I didn’t have to start all over at becoming profi cient at 20 yards. I want to go straight to shooting small groups at 50 yards. But right now, I couldn’t hit an elephant at that distance. And then there are my weak muscles – the ones I need to hold the bow steady and the ones that I need to draw it back with. I guess what I’m saying is... if you don’t use it, you lose it. I think that phrase is one of the fi rst ones that I ever remember someone saying. It was always used to cause me to look at whether I was appropriat- ing my God-given gifts and talents, or whether I was allowing spiritual atrophy ...get out & enjoy nature! Thursday, July 28-August 3, 2011 Outdoor Connection FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ to set in. (If I didn’t use them, I would lose them.) I have never forgotten that warning and have applied its’ truth to just about every area of my life. And it has never caused me to doubt its’ value. In the physical things in life, I have found that I lose it quicker. This means I can’t allow as much time to pass as I perhaps once did. If it involves muscles, the older I get, the more likely it will be that I will lose it on a faster scale. In the spiritual world, it is somewhat different. While we do lose those things that we do not use, we can be assured that all of what we have come to know about God goes into a bank for future with- drawal. These truths are not stagnating, but are earning interest as we continue to live our daily lives. Then, just when we need it most, the Holy Spirit reminds us of one of the deposits we made, per- haps years ago, just for this particular purpose, and tells us that now is the time to apply it. “Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” www.outdoortruths.or CAMPERS/RVs CAMPERS/RVs 32’ TRAVEL TRAILER, 2005 Cardinal by Forest River. 3 slides, queen bed, 2 sofa sleep- ers, 1 owner, $22,000 obo. 704- 616-5353. www.outdoortruths.org CAMPERS/RVs CAMPERS/RVs 2008 FOUR WINDS CAMPER @ Lake James Landing, 30’ w/2 slide outs, everything goes; EZ Golf cart, grills, etc. $28,000. 828-447-9622. CHOOSING CHOOSING THE RIGHT LURE E G THE What lure should I use? That’s a question bass anglers ask time and time again, especially when exploring a new body of water. Although many factors determine the best lure for a given situation, water depth should be a prime consideration. For example, when fishing Shelby Gold Winners In Softball Tournament Pictured above are winners of the AAU Top Gun Sports Girls Fastpitch Softball Sh lb G ld Wi I S ftb ll T t Tournament held on July 23, 2011 (for girls 12 and under). Submitted By Susan Canipe water that is relatively deep, say 15 to 25 feet of water, a lure retrieved just under the surface will not be very effective. Deeper levels require baits that reach the strike zone quickly. These lures include heavily weighted worms, deep- running or sinking crankbaits and jigging spoons. When fishing depths of 10 feet or less, use topwater plugs, shallow-running crankbaits, lightly weighted worms, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits or spinners retrieved just under the surface. Remember, a lure won’t work unless it’s placed where fish are holding. So as a rule of thumb, use a bait that stays in the strike zone.
