High cholesterol is com- monly considered a problem that only affects animals of the human per- suasion. However, high cholesterol levels can also compromise the cardiovascular health of pets as well. Hyperlipidermia, or high choles- terol, is excessive amounts of fat or fatty substances present in the bloodstream. Cholesterol is a waxy sub- stance that is produced in the liver in order to digest fats from one’s diet. Cho- lesterol is carried through the blood to various organs through large molecules called lipoproteins. There are different types of lipopro- teins, each responsible for different tasks. Just as with people, diet and heredity can play a role in a pet’s cholesterol levels. Dogs and cats can have high levels of cholesterol in they’re part of the family! High cholesterol affects pets also their bloodstream, levels that negatively impact health. Other factors that may increase cholesterol include hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, obesity, infl amma- tion of the pancreas, and diabetes. Veterinarians will con- duct tests to determine if a pet’s cholesterol levels are too high. These tests may include a complete blood count (CBC), chemical blood Lifejackets • Floating Frisbees and Toys 20%Off All Water Products www.RollOverPets.com 221-5 S. Bloodwork is usually done after a fast, and for ease on the pet owner, a dog or cat may be hospitalized in order to complete testing. The veterinarian may prescribe a low-fat diet in order to bring cholesterol levels in check. If this is not effective, medication or other therapies may be employed to lower choles- terol levels. Pets may have to undergo routine testing to check for cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the future. Much in the same way a person may make an effort to prevent cholesterol from being a problem, owners can alter the lifestyle of their dogs and cats. * Maintain a healthy weight. * Get routine exercise. * Limit fats in food. * Avoid “people food,” especially fatty items. * Regularly visit a vet for check-ups. While therapy dogs are respon- sible for these jobs, they do so much more -- including acting as a trusted compan- ion for someone diagnosed with cancer. Although many therapy dogs are specially trained in their roles, just about any well-mannered dog can serve in a therapeutic capacity. People may be surprised at all the many as- sistance roles dogs can play. * Help children read: Dogs are not judgmental and offer no criticism, which makes them prime helpers for chil- dren who need help learning to read or who have stage fright. Children can read stories to dogs who listen quietly and build up their confi dence levels. Some schools and libraries even institute programs where dogs are invited as the audi- ence to student readers. * Seizure alert: Some dogs are trained to alert epileptics and those with seizure dis- orders to an upcoming epi- sode, although this method of detection is not always foolproof. In general, seizure dogs provide companionship and security to a person dur- ing and after an episode. * Cancer therapy: Getting diagnosed with cancer can be a stressful event. Going through chemotherapy and radiation can take its toll on the body. Cancer patients often need all of the love and affection they can get or sometimes just a quiet companion. In a program The talents of therapy dogs Many people think of therapy dogs as guide dogs leading the blind, or dogs like Pets for Pals, therapy dogs sit with cancer pa- tients, often sensing what ill people need. Dogs have the innate ability to love uncondition- ally. Having a dog around gives patients a different topic of conversation other than their health and treatment. Petting a dog has been known to lower blood pressure and reduce stress as well. * Helping hands: Individuals who are handicapped may rely on dogs to do tasks around the house, from turning on lights to grabbing remote controls. But even if a dog isn’t a trained guard, he or she can alert if something is amiss in the house or if someone is at the door or outside of the home. Indi- viduals who live alone can benefi t from the companion- ship and level of security that dogs provide. Many therapy and service dogs start their lives as stray dogs or shelter dogs. Some training facilities actually seek out calm, well-man- nered shelter dogs and give them a new lease on life as a person’s helper or com- panion.
