He has a budget of almost $2 million and is now heavily engaged directing the new ten year capital improvement plan. The City of Shelby submitted an application to the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund requesting $500,000 for Phase 1 of the master plan on February 2, 2009. On October 5 of that year, the City Council formally accepted the $500,000 and unanimously approved matching funds for Phase 1 of the City Park Enhancement Project. For Director Charlie Holtzclaw it was a special OD RUN , time. This phase focuses on the forty plus acres of land located near the center of the park’s golf course. It includes three 300 feet baseball/softball fields with adjustable outfield fencing. Laser grading will provide for two more fields to be developed in the future. The fields will be of “championship calibre” with irrigation, fencing, specially conditioned infield clay and covered dugouts. A new playground in close proximity to the complex will serve smaller children while others are participating in sporting events. All common areas will be seeded with new grass and landscaping. Also included in this first phase will be a 20’ x 24’ covered picnic pavilion, horse- shoe pits, and a 6’ wide quarter mile walking trail. The entrance road will include one hundred paved parking spaces. Nearing completion, these phase will have a grand opening presentation in June. In addition to Shelby City Park the plan also includes futuristically, Hanna Park and Holly Oak Park. Also included are neighborhood parks: Optimist; Moose; Palmer; Kings Road and Plaster Parks, and Roark Plaza. Although, this tree only measures 10 feet and 2 inches in cir- cumference, it is a tree with a very special story that the class wanted to share. According to Ms. Tench, “the tree was planted in January 1952 and dedi- cated to Ms. Laura Cornwell, the school principal of 25 years. Since that time many principals, teachers and students have passed that very tree. It reflects the huge amount of learning that has come to that very place. Although the tree may not be the biggest in size, it sure has grown into a magnificent tree. Hopefully, all the years that students walked by this same tree, minds have con- tinued to grow just like this tree. All the education from this one place would be a magnificent sight to behold.” See MARION INTERMEDIATE Page 6 DOUBLE DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER CHEESEBURGER COMBO $ Your National Connection to local Media COMBO Only 399 99 Only 814 S. Jefferson Elementary School Great American Cleanup Project Keep Shelby Beautiful says “A BIG THANK YOU” to the Jefferson Elementary second graders who participated in a recent Great American Cleanup event. The twenty-two students spent a Friday afternoon cleaning the yards and school grounds at Jefferson Elementary. They collected about 100 pounds of trash, yard waste and recyclables. Thanks to their efforts, students and staff are able to enjoy clean school grounds on these beautiful spring days. The importance of educating young people about the environment is undeniable. Participating in a “Campus Cleanup” enhances environmental education as well as developing pride in the community. Congratulations to the Jefferson Elementary second graders on their efforts to keep Shelby beautiful.
