Jack noticed his friend, Fred, in distress, put his arms around Fred’s waist and administered abdominal thrusts until the food stuck in Fred’s throat was dislodged. Afterward, Jack, a volunteer with the Gaston County Chapter of the American Red Cross, noted that he was thank- ful he had taken the Red Cross CPR/First Aid course recently where he learned the skills to help someone who is choking. The American Red Cross offers training in life-saving skills to the community made possible by the dedicated volunteers that teach them. Community members require training to help their loved ones in the event of an emergency. Currently, your local Red Cross is in need of volunteer instructors to ensure the agency can continue to train thou- sands of people throughout our 14-county region. Training will be provided at no cost for these volunteers, who will have the opportunity to help others learn skills that can save a life. As part of the Red Cross education system, volunteers are also needed to help enter course information into a data- base.
