FISHING TIPS: BY MATT AREY Weighting Jerkbaits I have been in several situations on different lakes during the winter and early pre spawn months when the fish were just not real active and in a chasing mood. You had to put a bait right in front of their nose to get a bite. A lot of times these fish may be suspended in that 15-25 ft. range which is deeper than most stock jerkbaits will go. Here are a couple ways to weight your jerkbait in order to get them to down a little deeper and put them right in front of the fish. 1. Changing Hooks - I change the hooks on almost all the hardbaits I buy anyway but if you want that bait to sink go to a size or two larger than the stock hooks. As you change make sure you test the bait so you know exactly how fast the bait is actually sinking. 2. Changing Split Rings - You can either add an extra set or remove the stock rings and replace them with a size or two larger. 3. Using Suspend Strips - Most of your local tackle dealers will carry these. You simply peel the individual strips off the sheet they come on and stick them to the belly of your jerkbait. Matt Arey I use these methods only with jerkbaits that are already made to suspend right from the factory. Also remember that different jerkbaits react to different water temperatures and water density. I have seen some factory baits sink very slowly in extremely cold water and some actu- ally rise in hot water. Just use a trial and error method to find out exactly what will work best for you on that particular day. TITLE THE E-MAIL STORY OR PICTURE “FOR SHOPPER” OR I WILL ASSUME IT’S JUNK MAIL AND NOT OPEN IT. By Gary Miller By If one has been hunting or fi shing long enough, he has a few stories that fi t into the category of either questionable or unbelievable. In fact, those tales are so unbelievable, that without a witness to confi rm the event, most would not only question their veracity but would deny the outcome. I can quickly think about three such stories; all of which involve fi shing. One night I was fi shing with a friend from a covered pontoon when a fi sh jerked in my rod. The next morning we woke up casted out and reeled in the lost rod along with the fi sh that was still attached. Again, I have witnesses. Another time, while fi shing in the late summer, my friend dropped his glasses in the lake. He went back to what he thought was the approximate place dur- ing the winter when the lake authorities lower the lake levels. There on top of a stump were his glasses. And lastly, just a few years ago while fi shing in the river, I cast out my lure and catch two smallmouths at the same time; both hooked to my tiny torpedo. What I remember about that was not only the two that were hooked but a third that was trying to get its part as well. Yep, there’s no doubt that each of those stories can conjure up some seri- ous misgivings even though all of them can certainly be deemed possible. A story that is humanly impossible could SHELBY ...get out & enjoy nature! Thursday, April 28-May 4, 2011 Outdoor Connection FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ only be designed by God. And that is what the story of the resurrection is – a humanly im- possible story that is so inconceivable, it can only be designed by God. One of the greatest proofs of Chris- tianity is not just the fact of the resur- rection. In fact, non-Christians do not believe that something like that actually happened. But perhaps what a person ought to come to grips with fi rst is just who would design such an odd way to save the world. What human would come up with the crazy idea of a death on a cross, a burial, and then a resur- rection as a way to pay for one’s sins? What man would really take something as historically inhuman and cruel as a cross and decide they can make it be- come a universal symbol of hope and redemption? The answer is no man. Only God would think of something as cruel as a cross and as impossible as a resurrection, marry them together, and design a plan for mankind to be made right with his Creator. My friend, if you’re stuck on the reality of a resurrection for you to believe that Jesus was the Son of God, perhaps you just need to decide if anyone other than God could have come up with such an unlikely story. www outdoortruths.or COME SEE THE EXPERT TRANSMISSION RANSMISSION Service & P SPECIALISTS PECIALISTS vice & Parts ts Work Guaranteed 734 Nallel y Dr. She b NC Shelbl y, NC 704-482-8756 Hal 704-482-8756 BOATS BOATS 2003 YAMAHA GP 1300R with trailer. Randy S. McKinney Agency BASS MOODS ASS MOODS After bass leave their beds their mood can range from savagely aggressive to totally lock jawed. There is no set pattern and all sorts of lures can work now. Start looking for post spawn bass by locating vacated beds. Some bass hang around the edges after spawning. A 6-inch finesse worm works good by shaking and quivering it through the old nest. Also try a shallow ditch or creek channel leading from the nesting grounds to deeper water. The fish hold around stumps, bushes, lay down trees, and weeds. Some will only be in a foot of water, others will be deep. If the fish are shallow and it’s early, try a buzzbait. When the sun gets up, go to a floating- diving minnow-style lure. Cast it tight to cover and keep twitching until the bass takes it. Don’t get hung up on one lure or pattern.
