The Neal Senior Center (100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby) is joining senior centers and communities nationwide in celebrating this month with special activities and events. This year’s theme—Older Americans: Connecting the Community— The older adults in Cleveland County are the roots from which our county grows. pays homage to the many ways in which older adults bring inspiration and continuity to the fabric of our communities, and highlights how technology is helping older Americans live longer, healthier, and more engaged lives. They bestow gifts of wisdom and insight upon younger generations, and strengthen the bonds between neighbors to create a better place to live. The adults, age 55 and above in our county should be commended for their role in creating and bolstering the fiber of our community and nation; and Cleveland County can provide that recognition and respect by enriching the quality of life for older Americans by: Increasing their opportunities to remain in their communities as active and engaged citizens. Providing services, technologies, and support systems that allow seniors to foster and maintain connections within the community. Emphasizing the value of elders by publically recognizing their contributions to the diversity, strength, and unity of our community. The annual commemoration of Older Americans Month is the Senior Center’s opportunity to recognize the contributions of older citizens and join them in providing services and support that empower the elderly. Americans of all ages and backgrounds can volunteer with programs that improve health literacy, increase access to quality health services, offer food and nutrition services, provide financial and housing counseling, sponsor social activities and community engagement, and more. Contact the Neal Senior Center to find out what you can do to strengthen services for older Americans, this month and all year round.
