Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Editor’s Note Over the weekend, I bit into a piece of king cake with a small plastic baby represent- ing baby Jesus. The round cinnamon roll-like confection is a Mardi Gras tradition, and whoever gets the slice of cake with the small plastic baby Jesus will apparently have good luck for a year. Biting baby Jesus and swashing him around your mouth seems a little sacrilegious, but I’ll take luck wherever I can. I’ve been feeling pretty fortunate lately, and biting baby Jesus was the icing on the cake, so to speak. Unfortunate recent family circumstances have made all of the little things I would normally worry about seem irrelevant. I’m looking at the big picture, and feeling very 2 O-Town Scene March 10, 2011 lucky _ I’ve got intelligent, supportive friends; a creative- ly satisfying job with lovely coworkers; good health; the best dogs in the world; and a close family. Families are a crapshoot, and even though you can’t choose them, they’re yours for the long run. I lucked out with mine. A desire to be close to fam- ily is the reason I moved back to America from Italy three years ago, and the neces- sity to be close to family is the reason I moved back to Oneonta two years ago. They are the core of who I am. I spoke with Matthew Nelson for this week’s cover story. He talked about how his famous family’s legacy is the basis of who he is. He and his brother, Gunnar, have been tour- ing with their “Ricky Nelson Remembered” tribute show for about a year _ something he says constantly reminds him where he comes from, which he is grateful for. Playing with Barbie dolls as a girl is a part of who I am, as it is a part of Emily Popek, who talks about trying to dress her My First Barbie in this week’s Laygirl Fashion column. Another thing I’m grate- ful for _ Matthew Nelson told me his best friend is in the band Lifehouse. Trivial info? Yes. But, it makes me happy that I can share that bit of Nelson data whenever “Halfway Gone” comes on the radio. _ Cassandra Miller
