The Chargers took an early 2-0 lead as Nalley and Nathan Welch each hit one of two free throws before the Lions, on a three-pointer by Jayden Wagoner, vaulted ahead 3-2 with 3:18 left in the first period. After Pike Central scored four straight points on a basket and a pair of free throws by Nalley to take a 6-3 lead, Loogootee answered with an 8-0 scoring run to surge back into the lead, 11-6, with 4:11 remaining in the second period. A three-pointer by Souerdike pulled the Chargers to within 119, but the Lions, on back-to-back baskets by Brandon Armstrong and Wagoner, stretched their lead to 159 with 2:50 left in the first half. Back-to-back baskets by Nalley and Souerdike cut the deficit to 1513 but Loogootee extended its lead to 18-13 on a three-point play by Cade Wilcoxen with 1.9 seconds remaining in the second period. In the third period, with Pike Central trailing 20-15, the Chargers scored five straight points – on a three-point play and a pair of free throws by Souerdike – to pull even at 20-20 with 1:31 left in the quarter. The Lions, however, answered See power Past on B-3 During the first period, the Lady Chargers made four of 13 field goal attempts, while hitting just three of eight tries from the free throw line, but turned the ball over only once. "We've had times this year when shots weren't falling and you could really see the frustration build on their faces and it would affect us on both ends of the floor," Graham said afterward. "We missed some free throws and some shots early in this one. But we just kept plugging away and got better as the game went along." Pike Central began the second quarter with a 13-0 scoring run that extended its lead to 24-5 with 4:07 left in the second period. Nixon and Abbott contributed four points and three points, respectively, while Howes, McCammon and Whitehead added two points each. The Lady Hornets would pull to within 16 points twice, at 24-8 and 26-10, before a basket by Howes and a three-point play by Whitehead stretched the Lady Chargers' lead to 31-10 at halftime. Indianapolis Howe, which hit just two of 27 first-half field goal attempts while turning the ball over 14 times, could get no closer than 20 points during the second half. Howes led the Lady Chargers with 15 points while dishing out three assists and blocking four shots. "That's kind of what we expected during the year; we kind of figured she could be 15-plus every night and get everybody else to kind of contribute," Graham said. "So we're starting to see that a little bit. Hopefully, the confidence just keeps growing." See Holiday on B-2 The Pike Central High School girls' basketball team claimed seventh place in the 2013 Niehaus Lumber Holiday Classic with a 56-29 victory over Indianapolis Howe on Saturday, Dec. 28, at Vincennes University's Physical Education Complex. The win ended a streak of 10 consecutive defeats by the Lady Chargers dating back to a 53-44 loss to Mitchell in the opening round of last season's sectional tournament. Pike Central's last win was a 51-35 victory over Boonville on Jan. 29, 2013. "It just feels good to get a win," said Pike Central head coach Randy Graham, whose team opened the eight-team tournament with losses to Heritage Christian and North Knox on Friday, Dec. 27. "I think the kids showed improvement over the weekend. We've just got to keep heading in that direction." The Lady Chargers (1-9) got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first 10 points, with senior forward Emily Howes contributing four points and freshman guard/forward Jolene Whitehead netting three points, while sophomore guard Alyx Abbott and junior Lindsey Nixon added two points and one point, respectively. Indianapolis Howe (2-9) rallied, however, sandwiching a three-pointer by junior guard McKenna Ragsdale and a pair of free throws by freshman guard Sharnae Hardiman around a free throw by Pike Central junior guard Kimberly McCammon to close to within 11-5 at the end of the first quarter.
