If the cost of the project exceeds $850,000, the city would have to come up with the additional money. • A 69-yard touchdown run by Evansville Bosse senior running back Carrington Crutcher with 3:37 left in the fourth quarter lifted the Bulldogs to a 2520 come-from-behind victory over Pike Central in a first round sectional game played Oct. 25 at Weathers Field. The Chargers scored on each of their first four possessions – including a school-record 41-yard field goal by freshman Colton White that tied the game 1313 at halftime – to take a 2013 lead with 7:59 left in the third period. Senior tailback Kegan Aldridge rushed for 212 yards on 44 carries as the Pike Central offense, which ran a season-high 68 plays, controlled the ball for more than 33 of the game's 48 minutes. • The Pike County Library Board voted for the second time against creating a history/genealogy center at the former Barrett Memorial Library branch building in Petersburg, then voted to give it to the Pike County Commission during a special called meeting on Oct. 26. • Pike Central High School freshman Colton White received honorable mention when the 2013 Pocket Athletic Conference Boys' Soccer All-Conference Team was announced. White, who scored five goals and had a pair of assists, was the only freshman honored by the conference's coaches. November • A Winslow woman was shot to death late Oct. 29 and her ex-boyfriend was charged with murder and domestic violence in front of a minor. Christopher Morton, 32, of 900 E. Porter St., Winslow, was arrested about 2 a.m. on Oct. 30. Kelsie McDonald, 24, of 104 S. Bluff St., Winslow, was found with five gunshot wounds to her back. She was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in Jasper, where she was pronounced dead. Pike County Prosecutor Darrin McDonald announced during Morton's arraignment on Nov. 1 that the state will be seeking life without parole. • A dispute at a Petersburg liquor store led to the arrest of a local motel manager on charges of domestic battery, resisting arrest and contributing to the delinquency of a minor on Nov. 1. Brett D. Wicklein, 44, of 2115 W. Main St., Apt. 1, and Lisa Bradley reportedly had been involved in an altercation with a clerk at Ernie's Liquor Store. When police attempted to take Wicklein into custody at the Guest House Motel, he ran into his apartment, slammed the door closed and locked it. Officers then made a forced entry into the room and ordered Wicklein to the floor. When he did not obey, police forced him onto a bed and placed him in handcuffs. Two males, including a 17-year-old who tested positive for alcohol, were found in the apartment's bathroom. The juvenile told police that Wicklein had given him the alcohol. • Pike Central High School senior Colton Corlett was named the Pocket Athletic Conference's AllConference football team's punter while four other Chargers – senior tailback Kegan Aldridge, senior defensive back Chase Eaton, and senior offensive linemen Michael Seger and Dalton Miller – received honorable mention. • Pike Central High School freshman Madison Scott was named to the 2013 Pocket Athletic Conference Girls' Soccer All-Conference Team. Scott, who scored 18 of the Lady Chargers' 25 goals and had two assists, was one of two freshmen – Forest Park's Madisyn Hunt was the other – on the All-Conference Team. • Pike Central High School senior libero Lauren Morton was named to the Pocket Athletic Conference's Volleyball All-Conference Team, while senior middle blocker Emily Howes received honorable mention. • The Pike County School Corporation's Board of School Trustees voted to extend administrators' contracts through the 2014-15 school year while, at the same time, reducing the contracts for nurses and office staff by five days "at the end of the year" during its meeting on Nov. 11. The extension of the administrators' contracts – coming on the heels of a threepercent salary reduction for teachers during the 2013-14 school year – drew the ire of Pike County Teacher Association president Angie Baker, who confronted the school board immediately after it adjourned. • The Pike County Council approved $50,000 for construction and engineering of a sewer line from Petersburg to I-69 on Nov. 12. County commissioners had requested $850,000 from County Economic Development income Tax (CEDIT) funds for the sewer line. But the council decided to appropriate only $50,000 now and later the other $800,000 was requested as a loan from the CEDIT funds to be paid back by TIF funds. • Petersburg's Board of Public Works & Safety voted unanimously to hire Midwestern Engineers, Inc., to begin the design and preliminary engineering for the extension of sewer service to the Interstate 69 interchange on Nov. 18. • A Pike County jury found a Petersburg man guilty of murdering his mother on Nov. 21 and recommended that he be sentenced to life without parole. Because Andrew Satterfield, 38, of 3515 W. Cart Road, had admitted killing his mother in court documents and entered an insanity defense, the jury was asked to determine if he was guilty of murder or not responsible by reason of insanity at the time of the crime. The verdict came after nearly three days of testimony from 18 different witnesses, including a psychiatrist and two psychologists, as well as a videotape of Satterfield being interviewed by a State Fire Marshal investigator. • A rural Petersburg man was seriously injured when he apparently crossed the Thank You from BEST WAY COUNSELING, INC. Helping to improve your perspective through psychiatric and counseling services locally. Dr. John Lorenz and Staff to our many customers in Pike County & surrounding counties. Best Way Counseling, Inc. Oakland City, Indiana 812-789-5434 or 812-402-0020 Deno's YarD Barns & steel BuilDings 812-453-1067 — 812-632-0383 centerline and struck the rear dual wheels of a semitruck's trailer on Nov. 25. Josh Miller, 18, was driving an Indiana Department of Natural Resources truck north on Highway 61 near Coe, just south of CR 800 S., when, according to Indiana State Police, he fell asleep. Miller, who suffered serious arm and internal injuries, was taken by air ambulance to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, where he was listed in fair condition. His passenger, Emily Jacob, 22, of Huntingburg, a seasonal employee at Sugar Ridge Headquarters, was treated and released from Memorial Hospital at Jasper. • A ceremony on Nov. 29 marked the 100th anniversary of Hornady Park. Hornady Park was willed to the City of Petersburg upon the death of the last surviving Hornady family member, who died Nov. 28, 1913. December • The re-sentencing of a convicted murderer has been postponed until April 2014 due to time constraints. Chris Helsley, who was convicted of murdering Pike County EMTs Brad Maxwell and Marsha Hale in April 2001, was scheduled to be re-sentenced in Dubois County Court beginning Dec. 2. Three days had been set aside for the sentencing phase but when Helsley's defense listed 16 witnesses, it was determined that it would take longer than three days. • A former Pike County Highway Superintendent filed a lawsuit against a rural Petersburg man, who he claims hit him with a truck, and against the company where the man works. Bobby Joe Morton filed suit in Pike Circuit Court on Dec. 3, claiming that on May 23, 2013, Ronnie McCrary drove into him with a McCrary Drilling and Service, Inc., truck. According to Morton's complaint, he was working with the county highway department on CR 350 N., which had been closed while it was being paved. Allegedly, McCrary drove past the "road closed" signs "and proceeded east to the point of the road closure where Morton stood in the roadway waving his arms in an effort to stop McCrary's vehiicle" and McCrary "negligently drove the Mack truck into Morton," injuring him. • A winter storm dropped about a quarter-inch of ice and then between 10 and 13 inches of snow on top of that on Dec. 6, leaving a long line of cancellations and a few wrecks in its wake. The Winslow and Petersburg Christmas parades, both scheduled for Dec. 7, were cancelled, as well as numerous other events. Schools were closed in Pike County through Dec. 11. • The Pike County Council, by a 4-3 vote, approved $25,000 to purchase ground for a new EMS building on Dec. 10. The vote approved a request that had been tabled the previous two meetings and moves the county a step closer to building a new EMS building on Illinois Street beside the City of Petersburg's proposed new fire department building. • Shirley Van Meter, the newest member of the Pike County Public Library's Board of Trustees, was not permitted to make motions or vote during her first official meeting on Dec. 11, after the board's president, Phil Elkins, questioned the legality of Van Meter's appointment by the Pike County School Corporation's Board of School Trustees. After consulting with school board attorney Val Fleig, Pike County Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Blake confirmed that Van Meter's appointment was made "consistent with our procedures at a board meeting." Van Meter subsequently attended a special called meeting of the library board on Dec. 17, where she had full voting rights as a board member. • The Pike County Commission approved proposed new boundaries for commissioner and council districts, apparently prepared by Commissioner Assistant Melissa Bryant, without discussion by unanimous votes on Dec. 16. Indiana election law requires counties to keep their commissioner and council districts in balance. Pike County's commissioner and council boundaries had not been changed since the early 1980s and had become out-of-balance, with Commissioner District 1 having 60 percent of the population and the other two districts having about 20 percent each. • A Petersburg man was arrested on charges of arson and insurance fraud on Dec. 18. Kenneth T. Nash, 56, of 612 S. Sixth St., Petersburg, was charged in connection with a fire at his trailer-home on Sept. 17. According to a probable cause affidavit, the fire occurred about 30 minutes after Nash had been told to get his trailer-home off another person's property. • Pike Central Middle School eighth grader Erika Hendrixson scored a gamehigh 17 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked three shots to lead the Lady Chargers to a 36-29 win at Princeton on Dec. 18. • Andrew Satterfield, 38, of Petersburg, was sentenced to life without parole in Pike Circuit Court on Dec. 20. Satterfield had previously been convicted of murder, arson and attempted arson in the death of his mother, Kathy Satterfield, on Dec. 8, 2011. • Heavy rains dropping between five and eight inches of rain on Pike County and much of Southern Indiana Dec. 20-21 caused flash floods and water over highways and county roads. Three people had to be rescued from high water on Dec. 21: one clinging to a tree on the bank of Flat Creek for three hours, another from the top of his Jeep along Highway 56, and a third on Highway 64 just inside Gibson County. The rains also cancelled the Winslow Christmas Parade again and flooding of almost eight feet above floodstage was predicted for the White River. • The Pike Central High School boys' basketball team ended a 13-game losing streak with a 69-58 win over Vincennes Rivet on Dec. 20. The victory was also the first home win by the Chargers since beating Wood Memorial 50-44 on Jan. 6, 2012, a stretch of 14 games.
