The Press-Dispatch HHoliday Continued from page B-1 Whitehead added 12 points and a game-high four steals in the winning effort, while Nixon and sophomore forward/center Samantha Halbrader tossed in eight points each. Abbott, meanwhile, had five points, a pair of steals, an assist and one blocked shot before leaving the game after striking the back of her head against the padded base of the backboard with 2:05 left in the second quarter. "We missed her in the second half," Graham said. "I thought she played well all weekend for us. I just think she's got a stiff neck from where she hit the pole. You know, those muscles tense up to protect you. I think in a day or so, she'll be fine and ready to go. So I'm not too worried there." Senior Kaylee Hadley came off the bench to grab a game-high nine rebounds while Howes and Nixon both had eight. For the game, Pike Central made 21 of 62 field goal attempts, a 33.9 percent average, and hit 13 of 25 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. Hardiman paced Indianapolis Howe with 10 points and three steals while Ragsdale added nine points. Junior forward Tailor Soracco scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds. For the game, the Lady Hornets made eight of 62 field goal attempts, a 12.9 percent average, and hit 10 of 18 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 23 times. "We played a team that's been struggling a little bit, too, but we were able to execute and do some things, and we got to play a lot of kids," Graham said. "I think, just for the kids, they kind of needed that game where they could see shots going in." "Hopefully, it carries over into January for us," Graham added. "We open up with a conference game next Saturday, so we want to keep going in the right direction." Pike Central returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 4, when the Lady Chargers will host South Spencer. The junior varsity game will tip off at noon, with the varsity contest scheduled to follow at 1:30 p.m. "Hopefully, the confidence just keeps growing," Graham said. "They're working hard. A couple of our practices over break were a couple of our best ones we've had over the whole season." "We've still got to improve our rebounding and we've got to improve our passing, but those things are fixable," Graham added. "We've seen those mistakes on tape and we're trying to work on them in practice, so that eventually will click." Heritage Christian 81, Pike Central 37 Heritage Christian, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A, converted 15 first-quarter turnovers by the Lady Chargers into 23 points while taking a 32-7 lead. After McCammon scored off an assist by Abbott to cut the Lady Eagles' lead to 12-6 midway through the first period, Heritage Christian hit eight of its next 16 field goal attempts, including two from beyond the threepoint line, while outscoring the Lady Chargers 20-1. "We just didn't space very well and we didn't come to the ball like we should have," said Graham. "When there's a double team and your person leaves you, you need to flash to the open spot, and we didn't do a very good job of that." "The turnovers led to a lot of their early points and gave them a big cushion," Graham added. "That's the quickest team we're going to see all year. They just have a lot of weapons." Heritage Christian's offensive onslaught continued in the second period. After Halbrader scored off an assist by McCammon, the Lady Eagles scored 10 straight points, including seven by sophomore guard Tyasha Harris, to open up a 42-9 lead with 5:43 left in the first half. The Lady Chargers would pull to within 31 points twice, at 42-11 and 44-13, before Heritage Christian scored six straight points to stretch Pike Central High School freshman Jolene Whitehead (25) looks to shoot while being defended by Indianapolis Howe junior McKenna Ragsdale (left) during game action on Saturday, Dec. 28. Ed Cahill photo. its lead to 50-13 with 3:36 remaining in the second period. Abbott and Nixon hit one of two free throws and Whitehead hit a jumper as Pike Central outscored the Lady Eagles 4-3 to cut the deficit to 53-17 at halftime. During the first half, Heritage Christian made 22 of 40 field goal attempts, a 55 percent average, while the Lady Chargers, who turned the ball over 21 times, attempted just 14 shots from the floor, hitting seven. "We didn't get very many shots," said Graham. "A lot of that was the result of our turnovers. But it seemed like we did get some good shots to fall that hadn't been falling for us." "Hopefully, that's a sign of good things to come, that the lid's coming off there," Graham added. "It makes it a lot easier to play defense and do other things when you're making baskets." Back-to-back three-pointers by Abbott pulled the Lady Chargers to within 55-25 with 4:46 left in the third period. However, that would be the closest Pike Central would get in the second half as Heritage Christian scored seven straight points to extend its lead to 62-25 with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. "They are so fast," Graham said of the Lady Eagles. "They're such a good passing team, a good shooting team, and our ability to guard them one-on-one was going to be difficult, matchup-wise, and their best player didn't even play. She's 6-3 and sat." "They're just a very talented group and somebody we're not going to see probably the rest of the year," Graham added. "We're going to see some good individuals, but we're not going to see just a team like that." Abbott led the Lady Chargers with 14 points and two steals while Nixon added seven points and four rebounds. Freshman forward Peyton Ruppel came off the bench to snare a team-high five rebounds. For the game, Pike Central made 15 of 38 field goal attempts, a 39.5 percent average, and hit five of 17 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 29 times. Senior guard Natalie Orr led Heritage Christian (11-1) with 16 points while Harris added 14 points. Junior guard Sydney Hall who had a gamehigh five steals, and Taylor Hall, who grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, also reached double figures in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sydney Hall and Harris dished out four assists each. For the game, the Lady Eagles made 34 of 68 field goal attempts, a 50 percent average, and hit six of 11 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 11 times. Free DNR program will teach squirrel hunting Registration is open for a free Indiana Department of Natural Resources program that will teach participants how to hunt squirrels in Indiana. "Hunt, Fish, Eat: Squirrels" is part of the ongoing "Hunt, Fish, Eat" program offered through the DNR 's Division of Fish and Wildlife that teaches Hoosiers self-reliance. The program is Saturday, Jan. 4, from noon to 4 p.m. at DNR Fire Headquarters in Morgan-Monroe State Forest, outside Martinsville. The program will focus on laws and regulations, firearms and safety, locating a hunting spot, field dressing your harvest, and handling and preparing your squirrel for the table. The session will include an opportunity to sample squirrel recipes, and examine hunting gear and resources. Participants must be new hunters, or new to small game hunting. All equipment is provided. Space is limited, so hunters are encouraged to register early. The program is offered with sponsorship and volunteer support from Squirrels Unlimited. To register or receive more information, call the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife at (317) 234-8440 or email dfwed@dnr.IN.gov. North Knox 70, Pike Central 42 North Knox, ranked No. 11 in Class 2A, scored 12 straight points to snap a 6-6 first-quarter tie while rolling to its second win over the Lady Chargers this season. After Howes scored to pull Pike Central to within 18-8 with 2:03 left in the first period, the Lady Warriors, on a three-pointer and a three-point play by sophomore guard Lexi Vieck, scored the final six points of the quarter to extend their lead to 26-8. During the first period, North Knox (7-2) hit 10 of 13 field goal attempts, including four of seven tries from beyond the three-point line, while the Lady Chargers, who turned the ball over 10 times, made three of seven field goal tries. "I thought the first five to six minutes, we competed," Graham said. "We handled the press about every time down the floor and we were getting some stops." "And then, after a timeout, we came out and just started throwing long passes down the middle of the floor and went away from what we were doing earlier," Graham added. "They were able to convert and they shot the ball very well. So, credit to them on the way they shot the ball." Pike Central scored the first five points of the second period, on a basket by McCammon and a three-pointer by Howes, to close to within 26-13 with 5:30 left in the first half. However, a three-pointer by senior guard Lauren Charlton sparked a 100 scoring spurt by North Knox that extended its lead to 36-13 with 3:57 remaining in the second period. The Lady Chargers would get no closer than 18 points the rest of the game. Howes led Pike Central with a season-high 21 points, hitting six of 11 field goal attempts, including three of five tries from beyond the threepoint line, and making six of 11 shots from the free throw line. "She shot the ball real well," Graham said. "When you look at this morning, Alyx had a good scoring game and I thought she managed the floor well with the amount of pressure she was under. And then she did it again tonight, and then Emily was able to knock some shots down and took it to the basket a little bit. We're starting to see some life and some signs of what we could do." "Other kids are going to have to show that they can score and step up and we're starting to see that a little bit," Graham added. "We've just got to be consistent with our play now and try to grow. We're still a young team. We like the kids we've got and the pieces we have. We feel that once we take care of the ball and do a little better job with some things that we'll be more consistent." McCammon added seven points while grabbing a team-high three steals. Halbrader and Whitehead tossed in five points apiece. For the game, the Lady Chargers made 11 of 36 field goal attempts, a 30.6 percent average, and hit 17 of 28 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 22 times. "As I told them in there, we've got to continue getting better at crashing the boards and taking care of the ball, because we're giving our opponents so many more opportunities to score," Graham said. "But I see improvement. It's just been hard with kids coming and going because of the injuries. We've just not had that consistency, but I think we're getting there. It's just taking longer than we all want." North Knox senior center Maria Gugliotta led both teams with 19 points and five rebounds while Vieck added 17 points and a gamehigh five steals. Charlton, who had 12 points, dished out six assists. For the game, the Lady Warriors made 26 of 45 field goal attempts, a 57.8 percent average, and hit 12 of 22 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 18 times.
