Washington at Heritage Hills High School Girls' Basketball Christmas basket lifts Lions to OT win By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Christmas arrived early for the Loogootee Junior High School seventh grade boys' basketball team. A basket by Max Christmas with 13 seconds left in overtime lifted the visiting Lions to a 22-21 victory over Pike Central on Monday, Dec. 23. Christmas had also hit a jumper with two seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 19-19. Pike Central fell behind 6-0 before Christian Benson hit a pair of free throws with 40.9 seconds left in the first period to get the Chargers on the scoreboard. After Loogootee's Nick Bowman scored to give the Lions an 8-2 lead, a free throw by Benson and a three-point play by Andrew Krieg pulled Pike Central to within 8-6 with 4:30 remaining in the second quarter. However, the Chargers would be held scoreless on their last four possessions of the first half as Loogootee – on a pair of free throws and a basket by Bailey Dearwester – stretched its lead to 12-6. Neither team mustered much of an offense in the third period, when Pike Central, on a pair of free throws by Hayden Kabrick, outscored the Lions 2-1 to cut the deficit to 13-8 heading into the final quarter. The score remained unchanged in the fourth period until Krieg hit the first of two free throw attempts to pull Pike Central to within 13-9 with 2:26 left in regulation. When Krieg missed his second free throw attempt, Benson grabbed the offensive rebound, but his putback attempt was blocked by Christmas. After Benson retrieved the ball, a shot by Kabrick was off the mark, but Jed Evans was there to grab the rebound and put it in the basket, cutting Loogootee's lead to 13-11 with 2:13 left. A pair of free throws by Dearwester with 2:08 remaining boosted the Lions' lead to 15-11, but a three-point play by Krieg with 1:47 left pulled the Chargers to within 15-14. After two more Dearwester free throws extended Loogootee's lead to 17-14 with 1:41 remaining, Pike Central, after Dearwester missed the front end of a one-and-one, cut the deficit to 17-16 on a pair of free throws by Evans with 41 seconds remaining. Evans sank both free throws, giving Pike Central its first lead of the game, at 19-17, before Max Christmas' game-tying jumper 10 seconds later forced overtime. The Chargers drew first blood in overtime, when Braxton Rice scored off an assist by Benson for a 21-19 lead with 2:36 left.
