Sunday school lesson for Dec. 29—Jesus is Presented in the Temple. Last week's trivia question and answer: Who was the Roman emperor when Jesus was born? Answer: Caesar Augustus. Next week's trivia question: The prophetess Anna was from which tribe? Hint—Luke. Mini message: The dedication Jewish families went through several ceremonies soon after a baby's birth. Every boy was circumcised and named on the eighth day after his birth. But surely the Son of God would not need to adhere to these laws. Mary and Joseph understood that Jesus was God's son but they also knew that they were to carry out these ceremonies according to God's law. Jesus was not born above the law, instead he fulfilled it perfectly. Until next week—May God bless us all with another New Year. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). He is the Messiah, Emmanuel, God is with us. Read John 1:1-5. Jesus died for the sins of the world. He died in our place on the cross to keep us from hell and eternal punishment. He is alive forever more and Jesus is coming soon. Thank you Jesus for all you have done for us. Happy Birthday Jesus! We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Jerry Blackwell, Interim Pastor Billie Grubb, Reporter Two Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam What is a church? It is strange but true that most people— even the great majority of religious people—do not know what a church is. Ask the average man what a church is, and he's apt to reply: "Well, anybody knows that! A church is a building where people go to worship God." But this is not correct. The word translated church, in our Bibles, simply means assembly. A church is not a building, but the assembly that meets in the building. Technically, a church is not even a religious gathering, for the same word is used in Acts 19:32 of a riotous mob which had assembled at Ephesus, and this verse says that this assembly was confused and that "the greater part knew not wherefore they were come together." Perhaps this could apply to many a church today, but the point is that a church is not a building but an assembly of people. The church of which the Bible has most to say is "the Church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood" (Acts 20:28), and St. Paul calls the church of this present dispensation, "the Body of Christ," or "the Church which is His Body" (I Corinthians 12:27; Eph.esians 1:22, 23). Men cannot join this Church by water baptism or any other religious rite, but only by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. With regard to believers in Christ St. Paul declares: "By one Spirit are we all baptized into one Body" (I Corinthians 12:13). And in Romans 12:5 the Apostle says that "ye, being many, are one body in Christ." Many sincere people have had their names on local church rolls for many years before learning this great truth—that the true Church of God is not a building, but the assembly of those who trust in Christ as their Savior. Doubtless, people in and out of many of the religious organizations we call churches belong to this one great Bible Church, while others, with all their religious profession, do not. The question is: Have we sincerely trusted in Christ as the Savior who died for our sins? Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Religion may improve health There is an abundance of health tips on TV and the Internet. Most of them are probably good. Maybe one of the best is our joy in living. This includes a good attitude, positive attitude, faith in God, and service to others. Without a doubt these religious tips are good for your health. A major study reveals that people who live by biblical values live longer, enjoy life more, and are less likely to be sick. The study shows that regular church attendees live longer. They have fewer heart attacks, less high blood pressure and hypertension. The study showed that religious people are less likely to abuse alcohol and are far less likely to use illicit drugs. One study found that 89 percent of alcoholics had no interest in religion. A major reason for health problems is divorce. The study found that people who attend church regularly are twice as likely to stay married. The values taught in church emphasize sexual fidelity, family stability, and good living in general. Those who do not attend church or have faith in God often ex- perience emotional pain and anxiety. The loneliness often stems from a sense of separation from God and meaning in life. One's overall well-being tends to increase with regular church attendance. There are two states that may serve as illustrations as how lifestyles affect one's health. The state of Utah is populated by church going Mormons who don't drink alcohol or smoke. They have the lowest rate of heart attacks. In neighboring Nevada, with low church attendance and, where people stay up all night in smoky casinos with alcohol and gambling, the results are opposite. Nevada has one of the highest rates of heart attacks. Love God, live a Christian lifestyle and one of the benefits may be better health.
