B-8 Wednesday, December 25, 2013 The Press-Dispatch Focus on the money: Celebrating the holidays Reflecting on 2013 As the New Year approaches it is helpful to reflect on decisions you have made this year and ones for the upcoming year. Retirement If you are not yet retired, it is vital to think about appropriate investment choices and allocations for you to make in your 401(k) plan or other employer sponsored plans. In addition, consider how you make these selections carefully and objectively without being influenced by rates of returns of the current year. Also, keep in mind your comfort level/ risk tolerance, as some investments with sizzling returns may carry higher risks than with what you are comfortable. Beneficiary Designations As much as no one likes to, it's important to think about what happens when the unexpected happens. Things to consider: If you make your "estate" a beneficiary of assets, do you know clearly who should take possession when you leave the planet? When is your personal trust a better beneficiary than an individual? If you intend to give to a charity and yet leave your children and spouse assets, which ones should go to the charity, and which to your family for the most tax-efficient gift? This is something many people don't want to consider, but it is important to have things lined up the way you would like them in the event something does happen to you. It is important to plan now for all aspects in the future. Personal Inventory Year-end inventory is as vital as "spring cleaning." So start the new year on the right note by knowing where to locate your most treasured possessions (insurance policies, statements, tax documents, mortgage documents, marriage licenses, birth certificate, passports and oh, yes—passwords to important sites). You should also consider how you protect these treasured possessions, yet make it easy for someone to step into your shoes in the event it becomes necessary. These are all important considerations that speak volumes about what we treasure. They help us end the year on a good note, while beginning the New Year with a sense of well-being.
