The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 25, 2013 Rally lifts 8th graders to win at Barr-Reeve Trailing 20 -16 at the end of the third period, the Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team outscored host Barr-Reeve 13-4 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lady Vikings 29-24 on Saturday, Dec. 21. "We trailed in the game until about three minutes to go, when Jalah Barnes came up with a huge rebound on our side and went up strong, getting the basket and the foul," said Lady Chargers head coach Eric Knight. "After sinking her 'and one,' it lit a spark in the girls and they never looked back. The girls went to the line six times in the fourth quarter and never missed a free throw." Knight said that the Lady Chargers had plenty of open looks at the basket, which he attributed in large part to the guard play of Demi Croak, who, according to Knight, "controlled the offense and handled the ball magnificently." "She has been working really hard this year with assistant coach Justin Knight on how to control an offense and protect the ball," Knight said. "I am very proud and happy for her." Knight added that he was also pleased with how his team played on the defensive end. "On the defensive side of the ball, the girls showed what kind of team they can be," Knight said. "They rotated well and went after everything. BarrReeve was a very good shooting team, but our defense got out on their shooters and stopped them from driving." Erika Hendrixson led Pike Central with eight points, while Barnes added seven points. "Erika and Jalah both had great games under the basket," Knight said. "They both came up with rebounds and both girls worked great on defense." Brook Nalley, who, along with Audra Stone, had six points, also drew praise from Knight. "Brook's defense made it hard for Barr-Reeve to run a play," Knight said. "Her ball pressure was great this game." With the win, the Lady Chargers improved to 10-2. "What a great way to finish up right before we go on holiday break!" Knight said. "The girls showed up ready to play. BarrReeve was a team that beat them last year and the girls really wanted this win. Our de- fense was excellent and our offense was the best we have played this year. "The girls will get a break here for the holidays," Knight added. "We will be in the gym over the break and getting ready for the second half of our schedule." In the seventh grade game, Moriah Bullock scored 10 points and Hannah Fuhs added nine as Barr-Reeve defeated Pike Central 31-20. McKenzie Dunn netted nine points to lead the Lady Chargers, while Hannah Carnahan and Hailey Marchino tossed in four points each. The Pike Central Middle School girls' basketball teams will return to action on Monday, Jan. 6, when they will host Tecumseh. B-5 Nalley leads 8th grade Chargers past Owensville, 34-21 Bryant Nalley scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to lead the Pike Central eighth grade boys' basketball team to a 34-21 victory over host Owensville on Thursday, Dec. 19. Tyler Tormohlen added nine points in the winning effort, while Chris Souerdike and Kaleb Claridge tossed in six and four points, respectively. With the win, the Chargers improved to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Two nights earlier, Nalley scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 45-29 loss at Forest Park. Souerdike added four points while Breyton Booker and Nick Hillyard had two points each. Pike Central, which hosted Loogootee on Monday, Dec. 23, will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 9, when it will host North Knox.
